The worst VCR I've tried... Ever!!!
Pros
Original 435mm body
Cons
Cheap housing, poor sound, poor picture, bad auto tracking system...
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Unfortunately, Hitachi didn't show me what they were able to do...
It was to replace my old VCR, a Zenith machine that I bought some 5 years ago. I went to Centre Hi-Fi because I saw the new Hitachi's VCR. I bought one and let's begin the troubles.
At the moment I unpackaged it and play a cassette, It happened terrible things. First, with a brand new commercial cassette (GI Jane with Demi Moore), The VCR was unable to find the right tracking setting either for sound and image. These things happened also with many other cassettes old or new, commercial or home made. Even ones recorded from TV shows was so bad that it was impossible to play them in an other VCR. To finish with GI Jane, the cassette refused to exit from the machine at the Eject prompt. I had to remove the plastic cover to release it!
Talking about plastic covers? The housing of this VCR is made from the worst plastic I've ever seen. If you take the machine between your hands, you can squeeze it over and over. The only part that assure rigidity of the unit is the mechanics of the machine who is in metal. All the rest is in plastic and even the exterior coating is very easy to scratch.
The remote is very difficult to operate because the buttons are too close and unlikely disposed on the remote control unit. For exemple, if you want to "still" because the telephone rings, you have to search several second to find the right button even after many weeks of use. Imagine when you operate it in the dark...
When I realised the poor quality of the machine I bought, I contact Centre-Hi-fi for a replacement or a refund...
Just a tip: This machine (665) and many other from Hitachi are impossible to repair. The only solution you can see is to ship the wrong VCR (at your fees)to Hitachi Canada (or America) to hope receive a replacement machine...
When I saw that, I litterally put my scumb bag VCR... in my scumb bag (I lost 140$ Can) And I bought an RCA 661HF with Commercial AdvanceTM, Movie AdvanceTM, VCR Plus SilverTM and all the outfit. I am very glad of my purchase and I made it for the same price at my local Wal-Mart!
I sincerely hope Hitachi (who is a world leader in consumer electronics by the way) will greatly improve their machines and the after-sale service because I think cunsumers will'nt be stupid for a long time.
