Excellent low cost Blue Tooth SiRFStarIII GPS Device
Pros
Excellent sensitivity, Blue tooth & Serial, small size, low cost
Cons
None - lower cost would be nice - expect price to fall this Dec 06
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
You might find a cheaper Blue tooth / Serial device, but it will not have the same specs. This is a very well designed GPS unit which I strongly recommend
I own three of these devices. The first one I bought just under one year ago I paid $189.00 for you can now buy them for under $100.00
Device is RS232 and Blue Tooth. Has a rechargeable battery and runs from external power. Both AC and DC adapters are included.
SiRFStarIII is SiRF Technology's primer GPS device, SiRF Technology is the #1 GPS chip (only nothing sold directly to public) manufacture in most markets in the world. The SiRFStarIII chip is one of the most sensitive fastest time to first fix (TTFF) on the market. DO NOT buy any other device that can not match SiRFStarIII spec and price.
Perfect example of how good this GPS device is TomTom GO uses SiRFStarIII chips. The pocket sized GPSLim236 can be placed under the seat in your car and still track (pick up signals from or 'see') GPS satellites, 'Cheaper' units need to be on the the dash board and may not even work then.
GPS devices need to track (pick up signals from or 'see') at least 3 satellites to navigate the signal that the SV (satellites) send is very very weak so a device has to have good sensitive to work. I am sure the GPSLIM236 will work great where ever you use it. The GPSLIM236 will work with any software that supports NMEA - which all but custom GPS software supports
My background: I worked in the GPS field for more the 10 years including 2+ years as Manager of SQA at SiRF Technology were I tested SiRF GPS devices and other GPS devices.
