What have I been missing?!?!?!?
That's what I just got done asking myself after replacing my SoundBlaster PCI-512 with the SoundBlaster Live! card. As a game player, I love to have the sounds cranked way up, and thought I had nice sound with my old SoundBlaster card. However, I had no idea the amount of realism the Live! has over the PCI-512. I'm hearing things I didn't hear with my previous soundcard.
I'm hearing more 3D sounds. I'm hearing a lot of background sounds. I'm hearing richer sounds. I think a lot of this has to do with the Environmental Audio that the Live! board has, and the games that are geared for Environmental Audio.
I honestly didn't hear any difference when playing an audio cd though. I was a bit disappointed when I didn't hear the same richness and depth that I heard from my games. However, the PCI-512 is a great card in its own right, and the audio cd isn't set up for Environmental Audio, so perhaps that's why. I guess I just expected the music to explode out of the speakers! :)
Installation was a snap. I didn't even need the instruction booklet. It was a matter of pulling the old card, dropping in the new, and hooking up the cable from the CD to the soundcard. I turned the computer on, and Plug-n-Play found it and the drivers with no problem.
