IBM InfoPrint 1422 Laser Printer - Good Print Quality Aggravated by Frequent Paper Jams

Pros high quality print, good size, can be used by two workstations
Cons frequent paper jams, high cost of toner cartridges
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Depending on how well you can deal with paper jams, this could be a great inexpensive laser printer or a source of extreme aggravation.
I have been working with the IBM InfoPrint 1422 Laser Printer for almost a year now as we have this printer exclusively at the hotel. It's a real workhorse as it gets a workout with all of the printouts we do. Our volume is huge. I would say we go through two reams of paper a day at least on all of our printers, and we have four of them that are very active.

The IBM InfoPrint 1422 Laser Printer is fairly compact for a laser printer. It's not small by any means, but it's a good fit in the sliding shelves we have at work and a lot smaller than some of the monstrosities I've seen on the market. It's strictly a black and white laser printer, and with the price of color laser printers coming down so much it won't be long before this is a dinosaur, I am sure.

The IBM InfoPrint 1422 Laser Printer connects to the worskstation PC through either a serial or parallel cable. This is fine as we have used it with both. It can also be connected to two workstations at the same time, making it easy to share without getting into any further networking. There's a CD with the software for installing the drivers which accompanies the printer. The software is basic and generally lets the operating system handle most of the functions.

We do a lot of reports with the IBM InfoPrint 1422 Laser Printer. They print out very good quality and easy to read. Other than times when the paper jams, I haven't seen any smearing of the ink. This is important since we don't use pre-printed checkout slips and the invoices must look professional with the brand insignias for all of the Hilton hotels at the bottom. The softer tones in black and white work well too, as there are points of these invoices were a lighter background is used with black letters. I could see where there might be a possibility for this to be hard on people with poor eyesight, but in general even this portion is easy to read. Overall the quality of the print is excellent – it has a maximum resolution of 1200 dpi.

The print speed is 32 pages per minute with the standard 366 Mhz processor and 32 mb of RAM. (The RAM is expandable up to 288 MB max.) That might not sound like a fast speed, but we put it through the motions quite a bit and I would say it's probably a bit faster than that. I have had up to 80 checkout slips to process and slip under the door and I can't say that it took 3 minutes for those to print out. Our nightly reports print fairly quickly as well and they are about an inch stack of reports. It will handle both legal and letter size paper. Envelopes can be printed as well although we don't use it for that.

We've had a few issues with the IBM InfoPrint 1422 Laser Printer over our time using it. The main one is paper jams. It happens all the time, and I do mean all the time. It comes with one tray which is supposed to hold 250 sheets of paper. If we fill it more than 3/4 of the way, it doesn't feed the paper right. If the paper gets too low, it sometimes won't feed the paper right. If the room is too warm, the paper won't feed right. If the paper hasn't been fanned just a certain way, it won't feed the paper right. Get the picture? I can't tell you how many nights I have been so aggravated just trying to get out what I need to do my job when it seems like it's just trying to be difficult, never mind how much paper we waste. Some nights I end up having to pull out the toner cartridge multiple times to pull out papers that didn't feed correctly. Other times I am constantly taking paper out of the tray or adding it, trying to get it to just the right point where it feeds properly. Just tonight I printed out a registration sheet and it sucked down two pieces of paper so it was half on one sheet and half on another. That can be a problem when time is of the essence with 6 people standing in line to check in. At the very least, it's embarrassing when you have a businessman standing here and I have to print out another sheet for him.

The other issue we have with the IBM InfoPrint 1422 Laser Printer is the price of replacement toner cartridges. They are very expensive, around $140.00 each. Each cartridge should last about 6000 pages. I think we get a little more out of them, but it still seems expensive. Once they start going, the quality definitely isn't good for the registration slips and invoices. Parts fade out and don't look crisp at all. You might be able to get away with printing some reports until the toner level gets really low, but forget about any graphics.

There's a 1 year warranty from IBM on the IBM InfoPrint 1422 Laser Printer.

The IBM InfoPrint 1422 Laser Printer is a basic workgroup laser printer without any frills. That's what a lot of people need. It has good and bad points, it's just that the bad points can be extremely aggravating. The price is right, especially for many small businesses, at around $500 for a new model and $400 for a reconditioned one. If you can deal with the paper feed problems and the high cost of replacement toner cartridges, the quality of the printout is very good for that money.
