IBM z50: The PDA of the Decade!!
Pros
Size, Price, Abilities, Cool features!!
Cons
Dependability, No touch Screen
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Great for the money when you buy it at an Auction! Go eBay!!
A great Machine made by IBM. Of course, IBM makes great machines and has been for a
countless number of years.
First, A little memory background From PC Magazine:
"Memory is an area in which the WorkPad z50 outpaces most of the competition. It has
20MB of ROM, up to 48MB of RAM, and 4MB of VRAM; so its 8.2-inch VGA
dual-scan screen can display 64K colors. You'll also find a CompactFlash slot, a
video-out port, a Fast IR transceiver, an RJ-11 jack for the built-in 33.6-Kbps modem,
audio and microphone jacks, and a switch built into the display hinge that turns on the
voice recorder even when the unit is closed."
["IBM Workpad z50", Carol Venezia, PC Magazine, 5/11/99]
This little machine also boasts a Full size keyboard and PCMCIA Card slots, not typical
of many other "Pocket PC's". Although the z50 is not your typical Pocket PC.
What is has in excellent features, it lacks in dependability. Every time we would try to
save something and shut down, it would usually erase. Now, this defect was only
apparent in the one model that we had in our household. If it is like that in other models
too, you might want to consider thinking about "Syncing" it with you Regular computer
often.
It has a nice display, but it does not have a touchscreen (Like a Palm Pilot). That was a
negative for me. I did enjoy the size of this monster (A half-inch or so thick).
If you are thinking of purchasing this machine, I would go for it. However, buy it at
Auction on eBay or Yahoo.
