The Bottom Line:
Again, this is a great device if you can get over the battery issues. It serves many purposes and is a nice have for the consumer electronics fan.
The Imation RipGo! is one of the best ideas to hit consumer electronics. I wasn't part of the first wave to purchase the item but I jumped on board last year. There are many great uses but some annoying faults to the device.
Pros:
It's a portable CD burner/drive. You can bring it with you and plug it into any computer via USB. It burns at 4x which is fast enough with its mini-CDs. The Mini-CDs hold mp3 or WMA files and also can be used with regular CD audio. On a single CD you could have hours of music depending on the format. Mini-CDs are pretty inexpensive now and are more interchangeable than Secure Digital of Compact Flash. Most people don't own many memory cards but it easy very economical to buy a spindle of mini-CDRs. The unit is small and is sturdy. I've dropped it a couple times and it still works!
Cons:
SHORT BATTERY LIFE. This is the most annoying part. Imation says 5 hours of battery life but that assumes a low bitrate (meaning lower quality) in WMA format. Most music enthusiasts will require a higher bitrate and therefore reducing the battery life to almost 3 hours. Spare batteries are available from Imation but are $30 each. These special batteries would have been better if they were simple AAs. In order to charge the unit you must turn the RipGo on and then off again. If it is simply plugged in it won't recharge. Also be careful with the CD media as the player tends to recognize media without color on the writable side.
