The Bottom Line:  Great portable DVD player for the money. You can't go wrong with this one!
I've been in the market for a portable DVD player since my 18 month old son is becoming more impatient in riding in a vehicle for any length of time.

Turned off by the pricing of such items like the AudioVox Mobile Video Player VBP4000 and VBP5000, I searched for a simpler, cheaper solution.

I came across Gary Krakow's review of the Intial DVD-9510 on MSNBC. His findings led me to research the DVD player at a greater length. Since the local walMart sells the player (at the price of $169), I took at trip to see it in action.

After seeing it in person, I decided to purchase it, along with a CaseLogic DVD Player Case. Using the player was a breeze. Eschewing the reading of the manual, I took a DVD from my library, popped it in, plugged in the power, turned it on, and pressed play. Instantly, the DVD's menu came up. Getting the movie to play took all of two button presses.

The unit comes with the DVD player itself, a remote, an AC adapter, a 12v DC Adapter, a RCA Audio cable, an RCA video out cable, a Lithium-Ion battery pack, and a male to male interface unit for charging the battery pack. Sadly, you can't charge the battery pack and use the DVD at the same time, unless you have a Y-Cable with the same plugs. Ironically, a Compaq iPAQ PCMCIA Expansion Sleeve charging Y-Cable works perfectly fine in allowing one to charge both the battery and running the DVD player at the same time.

The unit plays everything that I've thrown at it. Single Layer DVD's of my wedding, Audio CD's, MP3 CD's, even Video CD's that I've compiled using Nero Burning ROM.

I have only one major complaint - Playing MP3 CD's is rather clunky. The interface really doesn't allow you to do much other than play things sequentially. It's not a major thing, since the DVD player isn't really supposed to play anything other than DVD's. MP3 playback is just a bit of icing on the cake.

The 4" screen has good brightness and contrast. Viewing angles are decent, with about a total of 100 degrees of viewing angle. The screen itself is a bit small, and can be viewed by more than one person, but it's really designed for solo viewing.

If you are looking to spend minimal amounts of money for a decent portable DVD player, head to your local WalMart and pick one of these up for $169. You'll be happy, and so will your pocketbook.
