A Great Computer

Pros Fast, elegant, easy to use, great software included, no viruses.
Cons Not a budget machine
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A beautiful machine that is easy to use good value for money and comes with some excellent software.
I needed a more powerful computer for a home based business work as well as my hobby, dabbling in video editing. Since my 17" PowerBook was several years old and lacked a large hard drive, the iMac seemed to be a reasonably priced way of upgrading to a faster desktop.
The 20 inch Intel Core Duo iMac is a thing of beauty and always attracts interest from visitors. I bought it online through the Mac store and customized it with a 500 Gb hard drive and 2 Gb of RAM. It arrived exquisitely packaged and was easy to set up. Since all of the drives, loudspeakers and other components are in the same case as the screen, the iMac looks a bit like the top of a giant iPod. It is elegant with a small footprint. The screen is large and bright.
There is a feature which allows the rapid transfer of settings, files and software from another (presumably older) Mac. This made the transition (from my 17" PowerBook) painless and fast. This machine is fast and will even work with Windows if you feel the need.
The iMac is a consumer machine, so there are no expansion slots or extra drive bays. If you need add-ons, they have to be plugged in. I use a 400 Gb external hard drive for backup. A read / write CD / DVD slot loading drive is at the top right of the screen.
The iMac comes with the iLife suite of software - iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD, iWeb and Garageband. In addition, you get Mail (for receiving email), ical (calendar), ichat, Safari (web browser), iTunes and other bits and bobs. Most of this software is easy to use - from the people who brought you iTunes, although iMovie has a bit of a learning curve. There is also a mediacenter type software package which uses an included remote control to access multimedia. The movie trailers are awesome.
Above the screen is a high quality webcam that can be used with the included Photobooth software to produce some useful and hilarious photographs. If you know other Mac users with webcams, you can teleconference with them using the iChat software.
What I love: the speed, size, elegance and ease of use. No fan noise and the speakers are good enough for most listening purposes. Regardless of what people have told you about viruses, the Mac has never been successfully compromised by them (if running Windows I presume all bets are off). Also, there is lots of software from thousands of companies - believe it or not, Microsoft is the biggest provider of Mac software after Apple.
What I hate: nothing, although I would like to see a more useful mouse (my wife hates it). The computer isn't a low cost machine, but is good value for the features included.
