The Bottom Line:
An overall excellent set at a very good price.
I have had my JVCAV32FA54 set for a few months now, and have been very pleased. I was in the market for a 32", flat tube television, doing a lot of research, looking at comparable sets from Sony, Panasonic, and others. When a local electronics superstore listed the JVC for $549, plus an additional 10% off, I went and had a look. After comparing it side by side with others in the same class, I went home with the JVC.
Yes, it's heavy – a 32" tube is a big hunk of glass. And with the speakers on the sides, it's pretty wide. I got some help from a neighbor putting it in place, and it fit nicely in my entertainment center. I had the cables ready, and set-up was quick and easy.
The picture is terrific. Every bit the equal of it's more expensive competition, it's bright and clear with good contrast. The flat screen means the picture looks good from a wide viewing angle. I can't vouch for the tuner – I have cable. DVD's look good even without s-video or component cables, but there are inputs for both should you want them. Sound is also very good from the on-board speakers.
The remote is a weak point. It's effective and full featured, but the buttons are small and the layout is not great. It's also very light and feels like it won't take much abuse. Its premature death could be a problem, as some functions are only available via the remote (such as changing the input source).
I have another JVC set in the house – an 11 year old, 20" set, and it's been great. I have every reason to believe that this one will be its equal.
