The Bottom Line:  A well made, affordable television set that is loaded with most of today's most popular features. The JVC AV-36260 is one of the best sets out there.
About a year ago my old T.V. finally quit. I had a 27" Magnavox that I had purchased from the newspaper for $150.00. Seeing as it was over 10 years old I decided to go buy a new one instead of having it fixed. So I started researching as to what T.V. to get. Boy was I in for a shock.

I couldn't believe how T.V.'s had changed. Flat screens T.V.'s, high-definition T.V.'s, digital T.V.'s. Good lord I didn't know where to start. Not to mention the features modern T.V.'s now have. Comb-filters, dark tubes, V-chips, language options, channel guards. I certainly was glad I took the time to learn what all that mumbo-jumbo meant because if I hadn't, I would have been at the mercy of the salesperson. Anyway, after roughly 2 weeks of research (checking the internet, consumer ratings, friends) I decided to get a 36" model. I wasn't sure which one yet but I had narrowed my choices down to a JVC or a Toshiba.
So off I went and ended up bringing home the JVC model AV-36320. Why you ask?? Read on.

But first a warning. I will be using technical terms to describe the T.V.'s feature throughout this opinion. I am sorry I can not explain each feature in detail but to do so would take too much time. I will attempt to explain some of the more important ones. I apologize if this confuses anyone.

Now on to the good stuff.

My first impression of the JVC was its fantastic picture. Of all the T.V.'s that were on display in the store(and there were a lot) I can honestly say that the JVC had possibly the best color, clarity, and resolution of the bunch. This T.V. has never failed to give me an absolutely great picture in the year I have owned it. This is in part due to its 800 lines of horizontal resolution and its 2 line digital comb filter which make for crisp clarity and sharp resolution. The JVC also has a feature called a dark tube which helps in cutting down glare. I have friends and family who own other brand 36" T.V.'s and they all say (without exception) that my JVC's picture is better than theirs. I must say that I agree.

Next is the sound. The JVC has front-mounted speakers that are located near the bottom of the set. They provide excellent quality stereo sound for standard television speakers. Technically it is called an MTS stereo audio system with SAP and Hyper Surround. I have no clue what that means (and if you do let me know) but the Hyper Surround is a feature you can turn on and off and it simulates a surround sound effect. I leave mine on all the time.

Ok now on to the remote. The JVC comes with a unified remote. This means it will operate other JVC equipment such as a VCR or DVD player. The remote is very big and clearly marked for easy operation. It is also well built. I have dropped mine numerous times onto my hard wood floors and aside from chipping the housing, the remote is no worse for wear. It still works great.

The JVC has about every type of hook-up/jack/input you can think of. It has 2 A/V inputs (one in front, one in rear),
1 S-video input, and component video inputs. So hooking the T.V. up to your theater system, VCR, DVD, or all three will not be a problem. It does not have VGA/SVGA inputs or A/V outputs but these are not really popular features. The front A/V input is really a bonus. It makes hooking up a video camera a snap without the bother of having to move the entire T.V. in order to reach the back.

The only con I can think of for the JVC is the fact that it doesn't have a sound leveler. Allow me to explain. Have you ever been channel surfing and come across a channel whose volume is much louder/softer than the rest? Well a sound leveler automatically adjusts the volume to match that of the other channels. This is not much of a con but a lot of other brands have this feature so I don't know why the JVC (with its list of over 40 features) doesn't.

Before I go I feel I must warn you of the JVC's weight. At 149.5lbs it is extremely heavy and impossible to move with just one person. And be careful when moving it as the majority of the weight is toward the front of the set making it very awkward. Also be aware that all 36" sets are around this weight.

The size specifications are as follows:
Width - 33 7/8"
Height - 30 1/8"
Depth - 23 3/4"

The JVC comes with a 2 year picture tube, and a 1 year parts and labor warranty.

As I stated earlier, the JVC has over 40 features and it would be impossible for me to list them all, however, I recommend visiting JVC's website at www.jvc.com. There you will find a complete list of the television's features and Best Buy's website has a glossary that explains what most of those features are.

So all in all I feel this is an excellent television set. And for around the price of $700.00 (which is hundreds less than some other models) is one of the best deals out there.
