The Bottom Line:
If you don't need to play mp3's and you already own a JVC in-dash receiver with changer control function, look no further. This one is it!
I recently got hold of a JVC CH-X1000 and after using it for a few months; I thought it might be a good time to review the player. It has JVC's new laser pickup system that allows the changer to playback both CD-R and CD-RW discs. A nice feature as it seems like everybody burns CD's now.
JVC touts this as the world's smallest 12 disc CD changer. It's available in two forms the standard CH-X1000 (uses JVC J-link connector) and hooks to JVC receivers only, or the JVC CH-X1000RF (radio FM modulated) and hooks to any AM/FM radio or receiver regardless of make. At roughly 10"wide by 7" deep by 4" high, the unit has a very small footprint and compares in size to some 6 and 10 disc units I looked at. Almost anyone can find a place to mount this unit.
The mounting brackets although plastic are nice and sturdy and you have the ability to mount the player horizontally, vertically or on an angle depending on your situation. Just a reminder, be careful if you use a power drill to screw the brackets down. Even though the plastic brackets are thick, they're still plastic and might break. Metal brackets would be nicer.
The color on the face of the unit is what JVC calls "electric blue". The rest of the unit is silver in color. Regarding the blue color, it is bright blue and really stands out. If you trunk mount, no problem but if you mount it in the vehicle interior and the unit is visible, it might be like putting up a sign that says ("hey look at this cool blue CD player, let's steal it"). So, take care and try to choose a semi-concealed location.
Here's a quick breakdown of the specs:
12 Disc CD Changer with Anti-Vibration Full Floating Mechanism
1-bit Digital to Analog Converter
High Precision 3-beam Laser Pickup
Track Error Recovery System
Shock Proof
Fast CD Access (6 seconds)
12 Disc See-Through Magazine
Smart Eject
Hung Mounting and Angled Mounting Capability
J- link hookup cable (works with JVC only)
1 year parts and labor warranty
CD-R And CD-RW Compatibility
Mounting and hooking up the player is easy if you take care and are good with tools. The installation instructions furnished with the player are straightforward and cover just about any type of mounting. Just select the location, attach the brackets and screw them to the sides of the player. If you have the standard JVC CH-X1000 with J-link cable as I do, you just connect it to the back of your JVC receiver and route the cable to the player. This one cable, which you can conceal under carpet, door sills or wherever handles all power and control functions, take care that you don't pinch or cut the cable or all your work is in vain.
The included CD magazine is a blue and clear plastic unit that holds 12 CD's. You slide out the trays one at a time and load discs until all 12 are filled. The trays are close together in the magazine so be careful and take time filling them. If you do jam one, you can slide a catch on the side that will release the trays so you can remove them. Slide open the door on the player and insert the magazine noting the arrow on the top for correct orientation. Slide the door closed, turn on your JVC receiver and play hours of music. When used with a JVC receiver, all functions for the player are controlled via the in-dash unit. Pretty much, push the button and play.
In use, the player is very quiet and changes from disc to disc quickly. I have not noticed any skipping even on the roughest pavement and it seems like JVC's anti shock system works well.
If you already own a JVC receiver that has changer controls built in, this is a great player to attach with it. I was lucky and got this one new in the box for $79.00 including shipping from an auction on Ebay. You should be able to find one for about $130.00 street price.
One last thing to note is that these players WILL NOT play mp3's. Therefore, if you do the mp3 thing you might want to look at the JVC CH-X1500. It looks similar to this unit (no blue color) and it plays mp3's.
