The Bottom Line:
Best value I've found in a DVD recorder with diugital tuner that can record for than 6 hours of shows.
The switch from ananlog to digital & HD TV channels sent me searching for ne ways to record favorite shows. Both my LG 787 and samsung AR650 do a nice job but limit me to maximum of 6hrs on 1 blank DVD.
Bought & returned Magnavox with built-in 160GB hard drive because it refused to record some TV channels.
Stumbled across JVC DR-M150B at Sams Club. Having previously owned
JVC DVD Recorder DRM10S which had a poor interface and sometimes required unplugging the power cord to unfreeze functions, I bought the new model but expected it to be a poor choice.
Surprisingly, JVC seems to have greatly improved almost everything. Interface is very similar to my Samsung DVDR and it responds quickly to remote ccntrol commands. So far the only freeze that required unplugging the power cord was when I played a DVD recorded with my Samsung and pressed the SKIP button on remote. In fairness to JVC, I had not finalized the DVD disk on my Samsung prior to playing it in the JVC. Almost every DVDr I've used lately tells you to finalize a disk if you plan on playing it in a different DVD player.
Setup was a breeze and scanning channels took the usual time (about 10 minutes). The JVC tuner found all my digital channels. I tested the instant record and timer record functions. All work perfectly on all TV channels. FYI, I have basic Cox Cable service (channels 2-17) and watch recorded shows on 50 inch Samsung HL-T5087SA.
Picture quality in the 6hr. DVD mode is almost as good as in the highest quality 1hr. mode which was surprising. I'm using Memorex DVD-RW blanks.
VHS deck will allow me extra recording time and ability to transfer some old Handi-Cam tapes to DVD but haven't tested those functions yet. I'll post more info as time goes on but in general, I'm happy with this purchase and plan on keeping it unless some unexpected surprised arise over time.
