Operating Instructions need clearer hazard warning
Pros
Unit has many features and records beautifully for unit in price category.
Cons
Operating instructions need a large and bold warning about static electricity.
Recommended it?

I used my JVC GR-SXM740 on numerous occasions with occasions with perfectly acceptable results, however recently I am convinced that I inadvertently zapped it. The purpose of this review is to warn others of the same susceptibility.
The JVC GR-SXM740 has an "RCA" video output jack to allow the camera to be connected directly to the input of a television set. Recently, immediately after making a connection to the input on a VCR, no adjustments of the tracking would eliminate tears in the playback image. The camera continues to record fine; tapes played back on another machine display the expected imagery.
I very strongly suspect that static electricity zapped something in the video output circuitry. It was a dry day, the machine was being operated off battery power in a room with carpeting.
Users are warned to make sure to ground the camera body before attempting to connect a video link. Grounding can be accomplished by touching the outer shell of the "RCA" jack to the outer shell of the "RCA" plug, BEFORE the plug is inserted into the jack.
