JVC GY-DV500 Mini DV

Pros 2 piece camera records color and detail very well
Cons does not record in LP
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  No reason not to use this camera !!!!
Very nice looking pro camera. First off its a 2 piece unit .Love it! With the Fuji lens attached it makes for a great pro DV camera package. I bought the JVC-X2BU in 1995 a SVHS 3 chip recorder w/16x Fuji lens great camera for $9k gave the exact same picture as a Betacam at the news station and its still going today! Anyway this DV 500 looks like a junior X2 but it is soooo much lighter and easy to pick up. All the controls are very easy to navigate .Most are the usual flip switches not too much menu stuff to click through which is always good ;) .Everything is straight forward as on all full size 2 piece news cameras. White balance /black /zebra buttons are in place under the lens on front of camera. It has the usual filter wheel settings in the same place under and next to the veiwfinder. Two XLR inputs and headphone plug all are good and worked well as expected. Timecode reader/writer and audio level controls are all together in one area ...nice.
Does not record in LP mode. Will record computer screens without flicker!!! Good addition. Camera gave a very good 720x480 digital picture. B/W view finder worked well and was sharp with bright/contrast dials.

No gripes on this camera except for the smaller diameter lens instead of the full diameter lens used on Betacams and DSR's and the X2.... if used it would give a extra full stop of light to the camera head. And it records in SP no LP .
This is a very good mid to high- level camera for documentaries, weddings ,corporate stuff. Not meant for the amateur on vacation, but if you want to start "In the business" I would give this good looking camera a place in your office and begin with this camera right here. I really like this camera.
UPDATE*
I have used the new JVC 5000 and would choose this way over the older model. This unit has very nice flipout lcd screen. Has better audio controls and a much more in-depth menu and details. Much more professional ENG camera than the first model. I will do a review about this unit soon.
