Picture Perfect

Pros DVD quality pictures
Cons Not S-VHS compatible; noisy cooling fan
Recommended it? Yes
The HM-DSR100 (DU/RU-DU comes with DISH antenna/RU is without) is an integrated DISH System receiver and digital video recorder (D-VHS). I have two units; so I consider it to be an excellent component overall for anyone who wants to record with a DISH satellite system.

The good points:
? It records the MPEG-2 bit stream digital signal (DVD quality) just as it is received from the satellite so there is absolutely no picture degradation from the original signal when played back unlike with VHS or even S-VHS.
? It records the program data screen along with the picture so it can be recalled as desired when replaying the tape.
? Records the Dolby Digital 5.1 signal. Has an AC-3 output to send this information to a Dolby Digital receiver or other component during playback.
? D-VHS recording setup as well as interval recording setup for an outboard video recorder is a snap through use of the on-screen satellite program guide.
? Will record and playback in VHS mode (but not S-VHS)
? Records digitally up to 7 hours using DF-420 tapes.

The problem areas:
? Has a cheap or at least an extremely noisy cooling fan. Not something for use in any sleeping area.
? Fast-forwarding a D-VHS program does not allow for a picture to be seen so you can stop the tape accurately. As a result, I still use S-VHS recorders to time?shift programs with commercials.
? Will not play S-VHS tapes.
? D-VHS tapes are pricey currently, like S-VHS tapes were 10 years ago. This is hard to understand since the tape formulation is purported to be the same as for S-VHS and the only difference being two additional holes in the cassette case. (Some people just buy S-VHS tape and drill the extra holes ? something I haven?t tried as yet.)
? Only records in the digital STD mode. There is a faster digital speed specification (HD) that gives a picture equal to that required by HDTV or 1080I.
? No S-VHS input.
? No quick random search like that available in DVD?s.

This recorder is for anyone who has a DISH satellite system and wants the same picture quality in recorded programs.
