Nice performance, nice price
Pros
Video control features, price
Cons
flimsy remote
Recommended it?
Yes
OK, I did the upgrade from Mono-TV speaker movie viewing to Home Theater/Surround sound viewing all at once, so I have encountered a bit of sensory overload, but this JVC unit fits in with my system quite nicely. Since I was buying everything all at once, I did have some budgetary constraints, but this unit didn't make too much of a dent in my wallet.
The picture is crisp. The color is rich. The sound is great. The remote is friendly (a little flimsy, though: I'll try not to drop it), and the functions are easy to use. It has plenty of picture control functions that other VCRs in its price range wouldn't think of offering, like error correction for bad tapes & different color/sharpness options. The commercial skip feature is nice, but gets a little too easily activated as the remote buttons are quite close together.
After run-throughs of all 4 Star Wars films (not continuously: just bits and pieces to test) and The Matrix, I'm quite pleased with its performance - even moreso since I can still afford the popcorn to munch on while watching. All in all, a great basic unit. Time will tell about its durability, but the main reason why I sought a JVC first was because I still use another JVC unit. I bought it in 1984. We'll see if they've kept up their standards. :-)
