JVC UXG50 Shelf System - Unbelievable for the Price!!!

Pros Rich sound from such a small device. Perfect for replacing PC speakers with additional functionality.
Cons Cheap speaker wire hard wired to the speakers so it can not be changed out.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  For the price, you can't go wrong for its multiple uses and format playback along with the quality, rich, adjustable sound.
Recently, my mother needed a Shelf System for her rental beach condo and we picked up a lesser model than this (JVC UX-G40). It filled the room completely and allows guests to play multiple formats including MP3's, CD's, CD-R's, etc.

I was VERY impressed with the sound quality and wanted to get one, but the G40 has been discontinued as far as Circuit City is concerned and most other retailers. I saw the G50 that has more wattage and decided it would replace an antiquated system we have had for many years. This incredible little device delivers even if you are into hosting an after hours party, long past the days I could ever think of this. I do not even raise the roof during hours, let alone after.

OK, the bad. CD's and MP3's do not play as loudly as if you connect to your PC and play it from the USB interface or FM radio stations [update - I was wrong with this assessment]. They certainly play loud enough for general listening, but if you want it to kick it up a notch, set your PC audio to the highest setting and play your music from there. There are only two speaker hookups and the wires are not of particular quality. Further they are hard wired into the speakers so that you can not change to better wires.

The good. It has a USB plug for your PC and an Aux to plug in your iPod or other external device. You have a 5 disc changer that operates in random, repeat a song or repeat a CD. It also comes with a remote that has full functionality, including setting the treble and bass from 0-5, depending on your preference.

The Sound Turbo really makes it thump and will fill a large room. We have a 2100 sq ft home made up mostly of the great room and it will run you out if at full volume. A headphone jack (no headphones) is included if you want to kick it without others being annoyed.

It also has AM/FM and this plays as loudly as running it through your PC. An antennae for each is included. You can pre-set up to 30 FM and 15 AM stations.

At over 100 watts per channel, it will liven up any room to be sure. It has replaced my PC speakers in fine fashion as well as the clunky, outdated Sony that used to fill my needs. For its size, I have not heard better including Bose's shelf stereos. They simply do not have the base nor do they completely fill a room like this system and the JVC is way less than half the price with more features.

The system is made of a silver durable plastic and the speakers are encased in black wood with a silver cover for the front that is removable and made of a soft material. For less than $150, it is hard to find anything better for sure and it outperforms and has more features than most if not all for $50-$100 more.

Definitely a value and super easy to set up. Make sure your internal PC speaker volume is set to its highest to achieve maximum results if you use it for this purpose. You can adjust the sound on the device remotely or use the round knob to place it at a desirable level. A final nicety is that you can change discs in one of the trays not in use and the disc that is being played will continue. Very nice feature.

Correction 4/6/07

OK, I was wrong about the faintness of CD/MP3 play. Apparently, I did not have the "Sound Turbo" on for these tests. It will crank them nearly as loud as through the PC with this feature activated either via the remote control or the button on the device. There is no reason for this feature to ever be off as it plays low music much more pleasantly under the "Sound Turbo" effects.
