The Bottom Line:
I would definitely recommend this player because of the many features it has and the solid reputation of JVC.
I looked around for a while at various in-dash cd player's which had mp3 capabilities. For information purposes, I have had different car audio setups in the past. I first had a Pioneer cd player which I purchased from Best Buy probably about 7 years ago and had it for at least 3-4 years and it worked great. The trim ring did have a problem staying on until someone finally took it out of my car now it probably is having problems staying on in someone elses car. Then I went to a stock cassette player for my Civic hatch and put a Honda factory changer in along with it. Worked great until the changer stopped working. Finally after looking around I saw this model and after experiencing JVC's quality in home audio decided for the money this player was definitely worth it. Being the bargain shopper I like to think I am, I started watching eBay. I finally purchased one about 2 months ago. Thus all leading up to this information I can now give you:
INSTALL
This was definitely an easy install. I did purchase a converter (harnness) from Best Buy. All I had to do was connect the wire from the back of the deck to the harnness and then plug the purchased harnness in to the factory harnness. It literally took about 15 minutes. Only easier install I have ever had was putting a factory deck ... makes sense huh?
SPECS
* This deck is a 200W max deck ... split up 50W for each of the 4 channels
* Plays all original cd's and burned cd's on cd-r,cd-rw,including mp3 formats ... not sure about mp3pro
* Great looking multi-color display ... mainly a blue/white and red color
* Comes with a remote control (battery included) and it even has a hole so you can put it on your keyring (NOTE: MY REMOTE BROKE ON THE SMALL PLASTIC PART WHERE IT HOLDS ON TO THE KEYRING...REMOTE WORKS FINE BUT YOU CANNOT PUT IT ON KEYRING ANYMORE. CALLED JVC TO ASK ABOUT REPLACED SEEING IT WAS ONLY 1 1/2 MONTHS OLD AND THEY SAID WARRANTY WOULD NOT COVER IT. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I WAS NOT IMPRESSED.)
* There are 2 Line Output terminals to expand your car audio needs
* Loudness feature to give a little boost
* CD Text, Name recognition ... works great with mp3 and other text enabled cd's
* Random and repeat modes
* III Tuner modes
* 18FM presets
* 6 AM presets
* A fader control for preamp
* 1 year warranty ... except for the remote apparently!
* Detatchable face with carrying case
OVERALL
My overall impression of this is that it is a great cd player and I am definitely glad I bought it ... especially considering I paid less for this player than the Pioneer I bought 7 years ago and this one has way more capabilities. One of my favorite features is the power button on the front ... I know exciting, but let me explain. When you press the power button without holding it for more than a second it will automatically lower the sound so you can still hear the music but just faintly. It is great for when you need to lower the volume because of a conversation in the car or when you need to receive/make a phone call.
The remote thing did make me a little upset especially sense it was either hanging from the ignition or in my pocket. However, to be perfectly honest, the only time I used the remote was when I was installing it just to make sure it worked. In my car, it is small enough that it is actually easy to physically touch the buttons on the player than to try using the remote ... especially if it is hanging with your keys in the ignition. The buttons on the player are laid out very well and it is easy to use.
The only thing I had trouble with concerning this player is trying to determine which software to get to burn mp3's with. I eventually got Roxio for a decent price and am using that (it is extremely easy to use), and it works out great. Not having much experience with mp3's was the only thing holding me back from using the full potential to this deck.
It is a great deck especially since you can find it right around $100 even new.
