Great overall but..
Pros
Sound is great. The sound it delivers is clear.
Cons
Mp3 player is able to plays good if not under lots of strain.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Great for the money, but if you want to find a a mp3 player that can take the strain look elsewhere.
When I decided to buy a cd player for my 2000 Corolla, I wanted something cheap (as in price), sounds great, played mp3s and was simple to use. My choice, obviously was the JVC kd-s890. The cd player has some very good points and also some bad ones.
Installation
Installation seemed very simple. I, myself did not install it, since I had no knowledge on how to install it, but watching the installer install the player did not look that difficult. The JVC fit perfectly in the din size corolla stock location. The only real modification was on the wires just adding an adapter to the cars wire so there wasn't any cutting or splicing to do. In all, installation with other accessories cost about $40.00 dollars.
Sound
Sound is a 9 out of 10. The kd-s890 delivers very clear sound. The sound has no distortion what so every with the mp3 and cd player. Although, it does have problems with the fm/am radio with ok reception. It does tend to get distorted when going over a hill or something, but sounds like if you were playing a cd when it is not distorted. Bass and treble are great, with no problems. The only thing that might get changed are the speakers since they do not sound very well. With better speakers the jvc will sound great.
Control and appearance
9 out of 10. The controls on the JVC are great! Easy and fast to use what more can you want! The remote control works great! From about 7 feet the remote still responds. The remote controls the essential stuff like volume, radio, and cd controls. Although it would have been nice to control the bass, treble, etc. The buttons are not too small, although the text on them is sometimes hard to read due to its size. It would have been if the kd-s890 also had some cd changer controls. The other cool thing is it has 2 rca outputs for some amps or any other device like an eq. I will probably add 2 amps later on and some speakers and woofers. The appearance is nice, not too flashy or too plain. It has no fancy smanshi graphic display or eq. Has digital like text (white) that is pretty ez to read. Also the mp3 player reads the disc alphabetically, which is something I don't like. I prefer my order kind of style, so I found a way to get around the alphabetical order. Instead of placing the name first, I placed numbers making them numerically ordered. For example: the file name is called John-Doe.mp3, so I did 001-John-Doe.mp3. Making the mp3 player read it with a number. So it goes it 001, 002, etc. with different songs in the order you want them!
Durability
7 out of 10. The reason for the 7 is the mp3 player's ability to play at extreme measures. I noticed that if the bass and treble are all the way up, and loud is on, the kd-s890 player gets very hot! It takes about 2 hours for it to heat up enough that the mp3 starts to skip a lot. That is the only downside I found in its durability. With the loud on and the bass and treble at 0, the player doesn't heat up much and plays good. Although it would be nice to fix that little glitch. Cd player plays fine with the bass and treble w/ loud on. As well as the radio.
Overall I give it 4 out 5 again due to the mp3 player's glitch, other than that for 120 bucks its a great buy! The quality and sound is great. The controls are great as well as the looks, if silver is your color.
