One year and still Loving my MP3 player

Pros Great price for MP3 player. Still love using after 1 year.
Cons Lowest volume setting, fastforward on Audio book MP3's,volume buttons on remote
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  You can not go wrong buying this MP3 player for this price. It is a definite joy to have for the past year (and years to come).
I had bought this JVC player over a year ago to replace the factory cassette unit in my Ford Escort. I wanted something more powerful, plays CD's plus offer MP3. I had read all the reviews of this product here at Epinions before deciding to buy the stereo. I was taking advantage of the free installation offer at the Grand opening of Best Buy in Toronto and the very low price of this MP3 player. The reviews here (and the negative reviews of other In-Dash decks) really convinced me to buy the JVC and I have not regretted it ever since.

The first thing that impressed me was how much more powerful my factory speakers were outputting right away with this new deck. I suddenly had bass when before I didn't. I have since changed to newer speakers and rarely have my volume above "20" on the dial because of how loud it really is.

This deck will also find MP3's from a sessioned disc. I work in the graphic industry (using Apple Macintosh's) and I get disc from clients all the time. The CDs are mainly for transporting of information and sometimes are sessioned. The CDs are useless once the information is transferred so I actually use these disc for my own data storage instead of throwing them away. I would burn the MP3s loose on the extra space on these discs and throw it into the JVC deck. It never has problems finding the MP3 and playing them. I never think about formats or organizing the MP3 to make it work on the JVC.

Others have already described the infinite positives of this deck so I will only list some of the insignificant negatives. Believe me, I'm only nit-picking at best. I definetly live with these little flaws.
1. Lowest volume "1" still can be pretty loud. Sometimes when I'm in the car with many people I lower the volume to its lowest setting in order to listen to our conversation. Even at its lowest setting I sometimes have to shut off the volume in order to hear anyone speak.
2. Fast Forward through a MP3 is still fairly slow. Fast Forward through regular MP3 songs is fine. Its just when I have Audio book MP3s does this become bothersome. Fast-forwarding through 5 to 10 mins of an audio Book MP3 takes almost a minute to do. I solved this problem by segmenting my Audio books in to 5min pieces and using the "next song" button.
3. The volume control on the remote is badly placed. The buttons for volume on the remote control are at the bottom of the device. Trying to push these buttons on this small device with one hand and I am sure you will have a hard time trying to keep it from falling on to the floor. The remote is in my glove compartment most of the time anyways.
4. Sometimes when the face is not put on correctly (yet still works in this position) it falls right off when I push the eject button. No harm done but a plastic ejection arm sometimes sticks out. I carefully push the arm back into the deck and place the face back on. Its fine after that. I guess just be careful to place the face on as correct as possible.

Again these are very minimal complaints. I see there is a newer JVC SX990. I believe the only difference is the Display is more Dot Matrix than the Calculator style charaters of the SX980. I still love my deck and see no reason to replace it anytime soon for any other deck out there. MP3 is the way to go for storing hundreds of songs and I definitely will be using this deck for a long time to come.
