Best for the price for what I wanted

Pros MP3 support, sound memory, aux in, good value
Cons Only has bass/treble and loudness
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If it meets your needs get it. JVC is high quality, as good as any other name brand.
I had this unit installed over the weekend in my Saturn SL. I wanted to be able to play MP3's in my new car which came with pretty good factory CD player. My portable wouldn't work without an FM tranmitter, Ive tried those before and they don't work very well. So I stated looking for a new indash unit. I had a JVC cassette deck in my previous car and really liked the sound memory, so that was a must-have. A midrange or EQ would be helpful. I wanted the ability to play MP3's, if I could plug my portable directly in that would be fine.

Pioneer has the EZ-EQ and Sony has EQ3 both of which I really liked, but their add-on units that let you have an aux in make the total cost considerably higher. I decided that the overall I liked JVC best and the KD-SX780 met all my important needs. But for only $40 more I could get the KD-SX990 which looked exactly the same and added the MP3 capability indash. I decided that the simplicity of one unit to play both regular CD's and MP3s was worth it, so as to not have the clutter of the portable and its wires and power cords.

I really like the looks of this unit, its uncluttered and logical as opposed to some units with swoopy curved buttons and complex displays. The muted silver trim complements my black dash nicely.

The sound quality is very good as I expected from JVC. The original Saturn unit was not bad, but this is an improvement. The MP# works perfectly so far. The random is better than my portable which would pick the same song one or two songs later quite often. The JVC seems to have more power than my stock unit, and more steps in the volume adjustment as well.

The sound memory is a great feature, I like to tinker with sound alot. I do miss a midrange but I can live without it.

This JVC is the best unit for what I needed, and so far I am very satisfied with this unit.

UPDATE 3-19-05
Almost two years now and it is still working perfectly. I had this in my Saturn SL for about 40,000 miles and it is now in a Camry. I do not believe that it has ever skipped once.
