Sound and Function
First the sound, its LOUD! For a smaller system it really cranks out the power. However, this isn't enough for me, I really made sure it was quality sound and not just alot of noise. It definitely delivers. No it won't replace your Bose home theater system, but for music (especially rock or rap oriented) it delivers. Some of the presets are better than others, but it also depends on your music. I primarily listen to rock and metal. I like to hear strong and articulate bass, with clear full midrange, and crisp cutting highs. The MX-GT80 delivers on ALL COUNTS. I even put in a classical orchestral cd just to check it out, and it still was phenominal. Powerful, deep low-end, yet all of the smaller, delicate instruments were still present. I ran a dvd player into it and it produced quality sound, of course with plenty of power, it won't replace a true 5.1 system for movie viewing though.
The remote is straight forward and easy the read and operate. Setting the clock and presets is again very straight foward. If you're experienced with electronics you could probably do it without even using the book. If you need the book, its all laid-out simply and easily. The lights and coloring are very impressive and eye-catching (alot of reds, some green and blue). It definitely wants to be the center of attention in any room. This may not be for those who prefer subdued decor, classy and elegant DO NOT apply here.
You can just look at the speakers, with those huge air tubes on top pointing out like cannons, and tell that they mean business. The subwoofer has 4 levels of power. The "Max Level" seems to be too much for my music, as it tends to produce a rumbling overtone effect. I typically use it on level 2 0r 3 and it delivers what I want. The presets are very good, but I really like the option to create my own. Basically you choose a preset that is closest to your taste, then you go right in as described and you can adjust bass, mid-range, and treble. Piece of cake! I was able to achieve EXACTLY what I wanted. Great feature!
The only concern I have at this point is the cd system. When you load or change from one cd tray to the next there is ALOT of commotion going on, and I just wonder about long term durability. Hopefully, it won't be a weak spot. I also prefer the three individual trays to the "carousel" type changer, alot easier to deal with. I do wish they had 2-3 sets of rca "in's" instead of just the one. This system is ideal as a stand-alone unit, its not really for running a whole entertainment setup.
Sound Pre-sets
Dance Club (my favorite stock setting, great highs + lows)
Hall (very ambient)
Stadium (Ambient, higher midrange)
Rock (boosted lows and mids, alittle muddy IMO)
Pop (similar to rock, with alittle less bass and more mids)
Classic (mid heavy, solid lows, poor high-end)
Bottom Line
The Gigatube is cool looking, very powerful, and impressive
sonically. I feel its a great value for $299. I looked a several other systems approaching that price that sounded like little more than pumped up boom boxes. If 350 watts isn't enough for you, they offer the MX-GT90, which is 460 watts, and has larger speakers! Highly recommended for a second, non-primary system.
