I know my husband all too well ~ When I hear, "I just want to look at . . . " I know that we will be going home with something! lol He is the kind of person that once he sets his mind on "looking," he is in the "buying" mood. I am a bit different in that I do not want to "look" unless I know we can afford to get something if we see something we like. So together we go in search of whatever it may be that will fit our budget! lol
My husband had a CD-ROM/cassette/stereo compact system in his work-out room for some time, but ended up taking it to work, and leaving it there. So, now with no music in his workout room, what do you think was on his mind!!! Yup! We began our search.
We looked at numerous brands with numerous options, but so
many stores who sell electronics as a side-venture wanted way too much for a compact system of questionable abilities. We finally ended up at Circuit City (which by the way is where we always seem to end up! lol) with a nice selection in all price ranges.
We had settled on one unit, when I spotted a JVC compact system on a "sale" table that was basically the same price and offered more power and more features. This unit was not an open-box sale, just an over-stock item, although the table was loaded with open-box and demo equipment. The box was sealed and the price was right. There were no big sale
signs around, just a small table off by itself with all sorts of electronic equipment on it. Next time you are out
shopping around, remember it really does pay to check out everything that is being displayed, even if it happens to be on a sale table.
The JVC MX-K5 compact system comes with a CD-ROM that will hold/play 3 CD's, a double cassette deck and a stereo tuner. The JVC also comes with a remote control that controls all functions included sleep and timer set up functions. The unit comes with 2 detached speakers that you can place where you want in the room. One nice thing is that this unit comes with a AM and FM antenna and even provides you the batteries for the remote control.
At $119 dollars I think we got a great deal. There are so many compact systems out there with brand names I have not
heard of that had higher sticker prices then this JVC. I know the name JVC and it is a well respected competitor in music and electronic equipment. If this had been a lesser known name I would have felt we were getting a "cheap" system, but with JVC behind it, I knew we were getting a piece of equipment that would work well and give us good quality sound.
The Amplifier for this system gives you 80 total watts which is pretty good power for a compact unit. If you have lower
watts then you will not get very clear sound when you turn the volume up, up and up. Higher watts give you less distortion and "stress" noise in your speakers. There is a terminal if you want to use headphones with this JVC.
The speakers are both a 3-way bass-reflex type with each speaker containing a woofer, midrange, and tweeter for good sound delivery. The speakers are fairly small, both being able to easily fit on a bookcase or shelf, but with today's technology, small can also mean big sound. The speakers are only about 8 " X 12" X 10."
The dual cassette decks allow you the option of listening to music or recording tape to tape, CD to tape, or stereo to tape. You many not think a dual cassette deck will ever come in handy for you, but believe me, if you have one you will
find that you will use both decks! The cassette deck features one-touch play, so with the click of one button your unit will come on and the tape will start playing. You have the option of using the control buttons on the unit itself or on the remote control.
The CD-ROM player will hold 3 CD's. You can program for normal, program, random, or repeat play ~ Normal play will play all tracks on all the CD's you have in the unit; Program will play only the selections you have programmed in, in the order you program them; Random will play tracks off all the CD's in a random order; Repeat can be set up to repeat all the tracks, repeat tracks on just one of the CD's, or to repeat just one selection over and over.
The stereo tuner has a 45 station pre-set capacity as well as having a seek & find or manual tuning to stations. Reception is good, even for us way out in the hills.
The main unit itself is a fairly compact size, but is a bit deeper than your normal shelf or bookcase. The size is
approximately 11" X 12" X 17" and the weight is just over 16 pounds.
The instruction booklet that comes with this JVC system is clearly written and labeled. You are talked through with the aid of diagrams each and every feature this unit has. You are shown how to install the remote's batteries, how to hook up your antenna, to using fade muting to selecting the sound mode. Directions are written in regular language for
good understanding.
This JVC MX-K5 comes with a 1 year parts and 1 year labor warranty.
