Have you seen it in real life? It is as gorgeous looking if not better than on the picture. The LCD display is like a command center which allows you to control every aspect of the system. Well, enough about looks; after all, that's not why I bought it.
When I was contemplating purchase of a new audio system, I eyed those systems that had a built in Minidisc player/recorder since I firmly believe that this is a future of music (at least, for the next 3-4 years; see my review of a portable minidisc recorder). JVC is a company that I trust and I looked at all the systems that JVC made that would fit my budget, sense of style, and requirements. I needed a bookshelf model-JVC makes only two models of this sort MXMD70 and MXMD90. The executive stereo models look too snobbish with their cherry tree colored speakers. MXMD90 is bulging with features and just looks scary. MXMD70 is sleek, has three CD capacity, excellent sound, an MD recorder, AM/FM tuner, remote. Did I mention looks?! If you are as enamored by this model as I am, go to jandr.com, they sell it for 329.00 (Crutchfield sells it for ..599.00). Unbelievable price difference!
The system allows to listen to CDs, make MD copies in three modes-direct CD, from audio source, and in "listening mode" where you listen to CDs, make your selections, and as soon as you reach 74 minutes, the MD recording starts. Nice feature if you like to make collections of "best of the best" as I do. The speakers are adequate (50 W) and the sound is crisp and adjustable (you can either go with preset equalizer settings or input your own setting).
The interface is simplified which is a great plus-it avoids "noisiness". No extra buttons, everything is functional and ergonomic. MD recorder/player has standard functions of all JVC MD recorders (to title input during playback-bummer).
A weak spot is the CD changer mechanism. It is covered by a rotating plate which though nice rolling, is rather cheap and will probably fall of right after warranty expires. Also, this system would be perfect had it got a tape player/recorder just for the hell of it -as a sign of respect to outdated technology.
Overall, the unit is perfect for a dormroom, office, or bedroom. It is advertised as a Minidisc system, and it is exactly that-all features are geared toward Minidisc technology with less attention given to other components.
