Hum problems on some units
Recommended it?
Yes
I bought this unit since I liked the large feature set for the price and wanted to take advantage of the compu-link features with my JVC D-VHS Dish Network system. Unfortunately you can not link these two units even though the JVC promo literature makes it seem as if you can link any recent JVC products. So, if you have intentions of using this feature, make sure your particular components can actually link. I had also read several comments about hum problems, but since some had it and some didn't I thought I'd take a chance. Unfortunately, my unit has it also. It is very noticeable at volumes above 45. I'm not talking about hiss, but a hum that absolutely should not exist even on a cheap amp. Now for the hiss... any amp in this price range is going to have hiss at higher volumes, but this one has more than the 10 year old Sony it replaced. Granted, it was a top of the line Sony, but I expected a top of the line JVC with ten year newer technology to have less hiss at comparable volumes, not more! Fortunately I decided to take another chance and exchange it for another unit. The new one turned out to be much better. Both the hum and hiss levels were now only present at very high volume levels (higher than I would ever use). Clearly JVC has some quality control issues to work out. Nevertheless, as long as you are willing to make an exchange or two to get a problem-free unit you will have a receiver which provides far more features than others in its same street price range of $500-600.
