The Bottom Line:
A beautiful receiver with serious design and or manufacturing flaws. Don?t buy this unit with out a complete money back guarantee/exchange for the length of the 2 year warranty.
JVC recently introduced their flagship receiver the JVC RX-DP20V 7.1 . I have been a dedicated JVC owner for 20 years so it is only natural for me to need this giant, powerful receiver! My last receiver came out just before DTS so I have been suffering for 5 years without DTS. I bought the new unit from an online retailer for $1150 including shipping. At this price it is the lowest priced THX Ultra 2 receiver with all of the included features.
Upon receiving the unit I was very pleased with the looks, size, features, and connections provided. The remote is well laid out. Instructions are complete and somewhat easy to follow. Simply put I love this receiver.
Unfortunately as with all new loves they do not all last. I connected my CD player to optical input and selected CD player from the remote. This was not the right setting but I did not know this. I then turned up the volume wondering why I did not hear the CD. Once the volume was raised beyond normal listening levels I could hear the AM/FM tuner playing. Not a random station but the station that was tuned in. What I had accidentally discovered is that this receiver fails to keep the radio signal out of other input selections. This was verified in a second unit and also in a unit at JVC New Jersey. JVC does not feel that this defect in design is serious enough to warrant correction.
The first receiver I had in my home also would not accept digital and analog connections from the CD player at the same time. When both were connected the sound level locked on high. The other problem I found with the first receiver was that it would not output video from the monitor out without the JVC CompuLink cable from the DVD connected.
I returned the first unit and ordered up a second new-in-the-box unit. This unit also bleeds over AM/FM signals through all other inputs. The second unit did function normally with optical and digital inputs and the monitor out operated without the CompuLink cable. Unfortunately this unit when warmed up in DVD home theater THX mode had a bad surround.
I contacted JVC customer service and found them to be completely without knowledge of this model. I contacted JVC through their website and waited 7 days for a response.
