JVC TH-A9 Home Theater System

Pros Easy to set up and use, nice looks and performance
Cons Small satellite speakers are not for serious music listeners
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If your objective is getting a home theater system that';s easy to set up and use and are not into serious music listening, the A9 can be a good choice.
The JVC TH-A9 is a ?home theater in a box? system from JVC. As such, it is optimized for surround sound using built-in Dolby Digital or DTS decoding and is adequate for music listening.

The system has 5 small satellite speakers (front left, front right, front center, rear left, rear right, 20W each) and a powered 8? 100W subwoofer. The amplifier for the entire system is housed in the subwoofer.

The DVD player is connected to the subwoofer by a cable and the satellites are connected to the subwoofer (that holds the 6-channel amplifier).

Style

The entire system looks stylish and hi-tech; the DVD player itself looks cool with a window on the top, through which you can see the disc. The disc is loaded by opening the lid that spans almost the entire top surface of the player.

The control buttons are located on top also ([Play], [Stop], [FF], [Rew], [Volume +], [Volume -], etc.) with [Open/Close] and [Power] buttons located on the front panel. The display is located in the middle of the front panel.

Inputs

The player?s rear panel has following inputs/outs: AM input, FM coaxial antenna input, analog stereo audio input, AC power input, composite-, component- and S-video outs, AV CompuLink, and connector for a cable that goes to the subwoofer.

The subwoofer has a matching connector to accept signal from the DVD player and also has a volume control knob on the back panel, phase switch, 5 speaker outs for satellites.

Features And Performance

The video performance of this system is excellent, especially when either S-Video or component video connection is used. The surround sound in Dolby Digital or DTS modes is very good with good bass provided by the powered subwoofer.

However, the Stereo CD playback is only adequate because of the small satellite speakers. If you plan to use the home theater system for serious music listening in addition to watching movies, you might want to look for a system with ?real? front speakers.

The DVD player plays finalized CD-R and CD-RW (VCD, CD-Audio) discs in addition to DVD Video, VCD and CD-Audio.

The player can decode DTS, Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic. There are also several surround modes and Digital Acoustic Modes. The player has resume function, zoom, JVC?s ?Digest? function, repeat play, program play, random play, fast (2x, 5x, 10x, 20x, 60x) and slow motion scan (6 slow speeds forward, 5 back).

There is parental lock, sleep timer, screen saver.

The system also features the AM/FM tuner with 30 FM and 15 AM presets.

Remote

The remote control can control TV, DBS and VCR in addition to the system itself. The buttons for channel change and volume are large and playback control buttons are logically laid out and reasonably sized. However, the buttons in the upper portion of the remote are small and indistinguishable in the low light situations.

Bottom Line

If your objective is getting a home theater system that?s easy to set up and use and are not into serious music listening, the A9 can be a good choice.
