The Bottom Line:
Provides good sound at a very good price. The few minor faults do not overshadow its solid performance.
I have found the XL-FZ258BK to be a very good performer. I have this 5 disc player hooked to my bathroom system and not my main system, but the sound has been very good. No complaints in sound at all. Disc exchange is a very good feature, which allows you to change the other 4 disc while one plays.
It has been very reliable with no faults or issues in 7 months. Has always worked and done exactly as asked. Disc change time is on the order of 6 - 10 seconds.
A few niggling faults. First, sometimes the drawer opens when turned on - sometimes not. When it opens at turn on, it leaves the previously selected disc in the machine, so don't put in another in its spot on the tray. Otherwise, you'll have 6 discs in a 5 disc player. Bad.
Second, the random play button on the front of the unit plays randomly through all five discs. It will not play randomly on only one disc. However, this feature is available from the remote.
And third - this is really nitpicking - the tray labels are difficult to see in poor lighting. They are molded into the black tray, so they are black on black. I fixed this with a white ink marker in thiry seconds.
Overall, if value is what you are looking for, this JVC delivers good sound for little money. In fact, it delivers 5 disc convenience for the same amount as a single disc player.
