A nice catchy alternative to Sony
Pros
Different look, backlit on the unit
Cons
Ugly remote!
Recommended it?
Yes
Sony MD players have always been THE units to own.. however, some people (such as myself) sometimes like to be different from the pack.. JVC offers a high quality portable minidisc player/recorder.
Here are some of its features:
- 40-second Shock protection
- Easy Editing with side jog and large display
- 5-mode edit functions (Join/Divide/Move/Erase/Title)
- 9 hour playback with rechargeable batteries (too little, stick with alkalines!)
- 30 hour playback with rechargeable and alkaline batteries (one of the longest playback times available for MD players, aside from the higher model E-series from Sony which are very expensive)
- ACB (Active Clear Bass)
- Remote with 10 Character back-lit display (I didn't like the remote too much because of its large boxy shape
- Jog Control for title input
- Digital Synchro Recording
- Random/repeat play
- Hold switch
- Rechargeable battery/AC adaptor/charger/headphones/remote control/carrying case provided
Dimensions = 3 3/16" x 13/16" x 3 5/8"
It is surprising that JVC would use a lithium battery.. they are considerably more expensive than their nickel cadium or nickel metal hydride counterparts. Also, the 9 hour playback time seems adequate, yet I would expect more out of a lithium ion battery. It's annoying that you must use so AA batteries in conjunction with the lithium to get 30 hour playback. 5-hour recording can be achieved by using this combination, which is also nice.
Unit has Microphone input capabilities, which is standard for a MD model priced like this.
The skip protection is marvelous, i haven't heard it skip yet, even when running sprints!
Sound quality matches all the minidisc players i have ever used before; excellent CD quality sound.
It's really nice to finally get a backlit display on the main unit, and not just on the remote.
Unit is small and light, fits well into your pocket.
Strong construction, feels sturdy, withstands a lot of jostling.
Great unit for its price. Comparable to the Sony R70 and R55 which are more expensive ($200-$220). This can be bought new somewhere from $180-$200.
