With MP3's being ballyhoed by everyone from computer magazines to every e-commerce out there, the rebel in me turned to looking for something that would satisfy my need to record my music in a format that would be convenient, cheap, and long-lasting. So, I found out about minidiscs. I chose JVC XM-R70SL probably because I keep my brand royalty for some time now, and for some other reasons that I am going to talk about.
The unit is sleek, small, convenient to use, and very practical. The long-lasting battery-life (38 hours with an optional battery pack) make it a pleasure to behold. Do not be fooled by the picture that is n this site, though. The LCD on the unit is not backlit, unlike the remote. Believe it or not, I contacted JVC and complained about it, they apologized and sent me three minidiscs as a consolation.
The optical/analog input allow me to copy CDs and MP3's.
One thing that you would need to do imediately, is to get rid of the headphones that come with the unit. For some reason, JVC thinks that we here in America prefer BIG headphones. For their own Japanese people, JVC markets cool ear-plugs on the same model (with backlit display on the unit, by the way). So, a substitute would come in handy (I got SONY for 20 bucks and sold "native" JVC giants for the same price on eBay).
If you are looking for a unit that could record the music of your choice and would be of very small dimensions, buy this unit. It is elegant, durable, uses cheap medium (2 bucks per MD), and produces killer sound. If you have lots of cash, want the latest gadget that would be out of date in a year, buy an MP3 player.
