For all the unforeseen twists and turns technology has taken, and all the twists and turns it will take as time marches through this new millennium, there is one sure thing - our tech toys and tools will continue to decrease in size. Even though portable CD players continue to get smaller, the limits of that technology are quickly being reached. Mini-Discs are not only more portable and durable, but also contain features that our most portable of CD players can only dream of having. Retailing for about three hundred dollars, one of these new toys is the XM-R70 Mini-Disc Digital Recording system from JVC.
As its name suggests, this unit allows for digital quality recording with the convenience of pocket-sized portability. Though the Mini-Disc technology is rather new (and, therefore, finding a pre-recorded album is nearly impossible), the ability to mix your own favorites into a customized Mini-Disc collection can be both a convenience and a welcome addiction.
To take full advantage of the XM-R70?s digital recording, a high-tech fiber optic cable can be purchased for around fifty dollars, easily integrating the Mini-Disc system into a JVC home system. If you don?t want to make that investment, or if your home sound system is not JVC, a simple analog/AV conversion cable can be plugged into the Line Out port, which also serves as the digital port for quick synchronized recording. Sound confusing? No worries - the Mini-Disc system comes with a full guidebook to help you through the intimidating aspects. Now on to power support.
The Mini-Disc?s compact rechargeable battery provides the user with fifteen hours of playback, and if that?s not enough time you can also take advantage of the enclosed battery extension device, which conveniently extends the play time for another fifteen hours. (This extension uses three AA alkaline batteries.) The Mini-Disc has other helpful features, too; forty seconds worth of shock protection insures that your listening will not be marred by annoying skips, and, unlike CD players that boast of skip protection, this feature of the Mini-Disc will not consume a much greater amount of your battery supply.
Finally, one of the most user-friendly aspects of the XM-R70 is a control stick located on the audio cable. With a backlit LCD screen and a full complement of play controls, which were rather straightforward and easy to use, this system can stay in a pocket or case until a Mini-Disc change or battery change is required; you can also program in the titles of songs for easy reference. A pair of convenient collapsible ear phones are even included, making this a great overall package.
The price is relatively high for the XM-R70 compared to your typical portables, but the cool sleek silver look matched with the ability to carry a digital recording and playing system in your pocket may be enough to call it a worthy investment.
