Control It All, Even the Sound
Pros
Surround Sound control. Great design. Easy to program. Advanced features.
Cons
Code for Samsung DVD player didn't work. Couldn't find a working code with alternate method.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Excellent design, large frequent-use buttons, many advanced features including home theater control. Save the package until you are sure all your components can be controlled.
I finally selected the Jensen JR800 Learning Universal Remote after shopping five stores and comparing all the models I saw. I was trying to locate a remote that could control my TV, VCR, DVD/CD player home theater system, an audio system with cassette decks, and a receiver and amplifier. The Jensen JR800 was the best-designed remote having codes for all the brands of components I had, plus controls for home theater systems.
I found the buttons to be well-located and easy to identify. At the top of the remote are the locater buttons - the Play button is in the center with Rewind, Stop, Fast-Forward, and Pause clustered around it. The Volume up/down is located on the top to the left of the cluster and the Channel up/down control is to the right.
The remote is well-balanced. Some of the controls are easy to use with one hand under the remote (device buttons and numeric buttons which are at the bottom). Other controls are placed in a way that I could use them by holding the sides of the remote with my thumb and and 2nd, 3rd and 4th finger allowing my index finger to do the selecting. The only thing I notice had to be done with two hands or two steps was selecting a device to power on or off, since the device buttons are at the bottom and the power button is at the top.
The remote also has seven buttons that have dual functions if the Shift key is depressed first. I did not try the PIP function since my TV is not so equipped, but the PIP and Swap keys seem well-placed. Other dual functions include Page -, Page , Surround Sound, Move, and Freeze.
As I said earlier, I selected the Jensen JR800 because it listed codes for all my components. However, I could not manage to program the remote to control the Samsung Home Theater system I have (HTDM-150). I tried using the DVD device button, then others when that did not work. The remote cycled through all the available codes for the selected device in its library without finding one. I am going to contact Samsung to see if there are any universal remotes that can control that model. I am downgrading my review of the Jensen JR800 remote to Above Average only because of this incompatibilty. If I find out in the future that it is me who is in error I will certainly attach a revision to this review. However, if home theater system DVD players are a different creature than a DVD player and need a different program protocol, I would suggest Jensen provide a brief statement addressing the issue on their packaging.
