The Bottom Line:
Hard to use in ideal conditions, much less a weather emergency.
I bought this unit to be my primary weather alert radio for tornado alerts. I live in North Alabama, and this is a active storm area. I rate this radio as poor. It is hard to use. The programming absolutely requires one to use the manual. This unit has the SAME coding system so that you only get alerts for the county or counties that you live in. However, after programming, it's difficult to confirm that its been done properly. Besides being hard to use, it has no TEST button as many weather radios have. The auxiliary power jack malfunctions on the unit. When the power goes off the unit resets to 12:00. I sent the unit back to the factory, and they sent a new one promptly, but the new one does the same thing. That makes me think it's a design problem. Imagine a weather radio that goes on the blink when a storm cuts the ac power; that's a serious flaw. The batteries were low after only two weeks of use, because I couldn't use the ac adapter. It has a jack for an ac power supply, but it doesn't come with the actual power supply, I had to scrounge one up. The am/fm radio seems to work well, but I really want the weather radio alert system to be the main function. The buttons are hard to find and read in good light, much less darkness. The buttons are black on a dark gray case with little contrast. The labels for the buttons are molded into the rubber, which means there's no contrast between the letters and the rubber. The backlight switch for the display is hard to find and the light only stays on for a moment. When the ac adapter is in use, the light still just lights momentarily. To enter the SAME codes, you have to resort to a cryptic numbering system because it doesn't have enough buttons for 1-10. The NOAA Alert mode seems to turn itself off after a period of time, and I can't tell if it will alert or not. This is my first SAME weather radio, and this was a poor purchase. I'll be trying again with another manufacturer.
