The Bottom Line:
I would strongly recommend a K40-2000 to any serious driver.
Personal Experience
Because of my hour drive to work daily, I have always been equipped with some sort of radar detection system. I started with the basic portable Cobra that I found at my local super retailer. I figured that all radar detectors did the same thing, went off when a cop was around. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case... This radar detector, and next one I tried, both less expensive systems ($49.99-$89.99) went off all of the time. I found they would go off when I was at the bank, supermarket, and sometimes when I was next to another vehicle with a radar detector in their car.
Enough is Enough
As you can see in my experience, I got what I paid for more than once, a noise maker that I ended up turning off on my way home because of the annoyance. I decided to step up to the plate and actually do some research before I made the same mistake for a third time. I started at my local Best Buy and asked the kid in the car audio section the difference between the Escort for $299.99 and the Whistler for $49.99. He didn't have much of an explanation, I'm not sure he really knew what he was talking about so I searched my favorite resource, the web :) From the information I gathered, the more expensive radars offered lots of bells and whistles to play with, like detectors that talk, and that was about it. I didn't want bells and whistles, I just wanted something to go off when it was supposed to so I could avoid speeding tickets.
Then K40...
During my search, I ran across a company I had never heard of before, never saw them at my local mass merchandiser, or in an advertisement. While visiting their website, www.k40.com, I was intrigued by a product they made, the K40-2000.
It was like nothing I had ever seen because this radar detector didn't stick to your windshield, or have an ugly cord hanging in the way. This K40-2000 is a completely installed radar detector. Because they don't sell to mass merchandisers, I had to locate an independent retailer in my area who was authorized by K40 to do the install. My experience at this local retailer was an educational one by far. They explained to me why the K40-2000 was the ultimate radar protection system and how it could be installed into my vehicle.
This system has 2 separate radar detectors/receivers built into the system, one for the front and one for the rear of the vehicle. This is an advantage because the detectors are able to locate whether the cop is in front or behind you. I was amazed to hear this is the only radar system with 2 radar detectors in one system! They also explained that because of the 2 detectors running on a single system, the likelihood of the 2000 picking up farther was much greater than running a radar detector with a single radar receiver.
Even more than having 2 detectors in one system... No more ugly cords or black boxes on my windshield. I had a choice whether I wanted two little lights drilled into my instrument cluster or little black 'pods' mounted on the base of my steering wheel. I chose the pods because the install was a little less expensive. These pods alert me when the K40-2000 picks up radar. If the K40-2000 detects a police threat, the pod will give me both an audio and visual alert. They also set it up so if my left pod goes off, that means the threat is in front of me, and if my right pod goes off, that means the threat is behind me. I can't believe I ever lived without not knowing exactly where the cop was!
Through this whole learning experience, I expressed my concern of this system driving me crazy and going off all of the time. They then explained to me that K40 has an 'advanced filtration circuit' built into the detector. This means that it filters out non-police signals and still lets all police signals in.
Fortunately, now when my K40-2000 goes off, I don't second guess it and slow down. For the most part, the system has been great. On a couple occasions, it has picked up some store alarms. Because of the way the K40 alerts me, I usually know when its a false or the real thing.
The Best Part...
When the guys at the electronics store were telling me about this unique system I was amazed. When they told me that this system and ALL K40 systems were backed by a 1 year unlimited speeding ticket guarantee I didn't believe them. I think the guarantee, dual radar protection and install capability sold me on this unit. When a manufacturer can back a product they sell, which no one else in the market does, with a speeding ticket guarantee and no fine print-I feel confident buying that product.
Price
I paid $1250.00 for this unit to be installed in my vehicle. They explained to me that the install time was about 3 hours because they need to mount the front and rear receiver, find a spot for the control on/off switch, and mount my pods. They also were upfront in saying this was the most expensive radar system on the market because of the dual radar receivers.
I definitely feel I have gotten my money's worth. The K40-2000 pod has saved me on several occasions, goes off when it's supposed to, doesn't effect the true integrity of my vehicle, allows me to know where the threat is coming from, and has a speeding ticket guarantee.
