I can definitely say that the DMC-J7R will be the last electronic device manufactured by Kenwood that I will sleep under the same roof with.
Not only did my device turn out defect, the service Kenwood "tried" to offer was, to say the best, pathetic.
I am currently living in Croatia, but travel on a near monthly basis to Germany. Money is not such trendy thing to have in my bank account, but, about 9 months ago, I decided that I must have an MD player. I searched and searched and found that the DMC-J7R would be the best device at the most affordable price for me. So I dug deep into my pocket and bought the thing.
I had the device for 3 months and, when I returned to Germany on business, I realized the recording processor had mysteriously broke (and had a confirmation from the repair man at a Kenwood distributor that it was a defect). This discovery came to being two days before leaving back to Germany, so I had to risk it and try to have the thing repaired in Croatia. The Kenwood people here first assured me it would not be a problem, despite the fact that I bought the device in another country. So I did not consider having to mail it to Germany. I waited a month. No processor. So I contacted the headquarters in Brussels and a representative there "promised" the immediate shipment of the processor. Nothing came even after another two months (and I called the Kenwood people in Croatia twice a week!).
Then the time came where I had to go to Germany, but only for a few days, and then to the States for a month. I went to the store where I bought my piece of malarky and they informed me that it would be a 3 week minimum of sending the device for repair and getting it back (mind you, it could not record but could play). I could not risk giving it up and contacted Brussels again, only to be told the processor left "Yesterday" to Zagreb and would be waiting for me when I returned. "Great! Finally!" I thought. So I brought the device with me to the States and listened to what I had and where I could (you can hardly hear it in a plane because of how low the volume is when maxed).
I returned to Zagreb only to hear the same ol' same ol' from the service people here. "It will be here next week!" Infuriated, I called Brussels and gave them all that I had only to be returned with an apology. By this time, the 6 month warrantee that I had when purchasing the product had expired and Kenwood would do nothing to protect their reputation. If only I had paid a lot of money to send it to Germany in the first place... but wait a second! Why pay $50 (US dollars) for that shipping... is it my fault?! Hell NO! I paid with hard earned money for this device. I am still without a proper working one and will not be able to buy another for a long time to come.
"Well, look on the bright side," I tell myself. "At least your options for electronic devices are narrowed in the future."
