Nice Sound but Awkward

Pros sound quality, power, so many functions, ipod/USB front hookup, Sirius ready!
Cons preset control, complicated versatility, remote has no preset control, no color selection.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  I want to recommend this, but I really can't. There isn't many Double Din units that have these features and is Sirius ready, functionality could be better.
I just purchased a 2007 Nissan Xterra S and I wanted a good receiver with Sirius satellite ready capability. I also wanted a receiver that looked as if it came with the car, but that called for a Double DIN (extra wide) type receiver, the Kenwood DPX-501 fit that bill.

Features:
The Kenwood comes with many controls and abilities.
- Power: CD player with built-in MOSFET amplifier (22 watts RMS/50 peak x 4 channels), most receivers are about 18 to 20 watts RMS.
- USB input (EASILY HOOKS UP YOUR IPOD or LAPTOP, GREAT FEATURE!)
- ACDrive (PhatNoise Media Manager software included) — announces artist, album, and genre names (nice feature, but kind of gets in the way of simplifying operation, see disadvantages below)
- System Q Sound Control (6 EQ curves)(rock, pop, talk, etc.)
- 3-band equalizer (BASS, MID & TREBLE not really an equalizer)
- 24-bit digital-to-analog converter
- System E's+ high- and low-pass filters
- two sets of preamp outputs (rear outputs can be switched to subwoofer mode)
- SIRIUS Satellite Radio-ready (SIRIUS tuner, subscription, and antenna required)
- HD Radio ready (separate tuner required)
- CD changer controls
- controls for Kenwood's optional iPod adapter
- auxiliary input (rear RCAs, adapter required for optional second Aux-In)
- wireless remote (a tad on the large size, but is fine with me)
- clock
- dual zone control (great for parents w/kids who want to hear their music in the back)

Advantages:
Sound quaility is very good, even with stock speakers. Sirius hookup is great without seeing the Sirius box externally. (6) presets with (4) levels of memories, Nice! Looks good with the Blue and red buttons. Power level is very good, really don't need an external amplifier but I heard one with it and it's even better. The only portion of the controls are nice, is the SRT button that switches you from Tuner, Sirius, CD, Main Menu, USB. It has a -30db Attenuator that is nice when you use a cell phone or you need to quickly talk to someone. (problem is remembering where it is)

Disadvantages:
Very long learning curve to have a basic understanding of operating the receiver. Instructions are somewhat vague. For example, you have Sirius playing and you want to go to another channel, you have to either move up one channel at a time, or pre-program that channel into the presets and try to remember where you stored it. If your Display is not set for Channel then you have to switch to 'Channel' Display and hope to remember which channel number or name you want to go. Very cumbersome. Display is only (1) line and very 80's look. I wish the clock would have had it's own separate display. You either pick, channel, artist, name of song, composer, clock. So if you have the channel name on, you don't see the clock.

Even though it has a nice blue and red buttons, it would be nice to have color change. The model 701 has this feature. I also wish the remote can switch the channels (Sirius) in presets, it only switches the Sirius channels one by one, too long when you have some 200 channels. One of the biggest problems is the pre-set buttons. If you push the presets at an average pressure nothing happens. You need to really push on and wait for a fraction of a second longer to get the station. If you wait too long it resets the preset. NOT GOOD. You can't use your remote for presets so your at the mercy of the presets on the unit.

UPDATE: 10/09/2007
I've owned this radio for 7 months now and it's WORSE than what I reported on previously. Eratic displays when I push the station preset buttons. I mention above that I had to push on the preset buttons 1 or 2 times, this had been gradually getting worse. I'm used to the functions now, but it's to no advantage. Eratic iPOD/USB hookups, I haven't had a connection in 2 weeks. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE. I'll probably replace this soon.
