Not great

Pros Easy to setup, good starter system, subwoofer
Cons Speakers cheap, receiver not very powerful, remote tiny
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I would recommend it to students and people who want to jump into home theater but don't know where to start!
I bought the HTB-503 about a year ago, 6 months later I replaced the front and centre channels. I was happy when I bought it but now I can see the flaws in it. I live in an apartment so I don't need a super loud system but quality of sound is important to me.

The receiver (Vr-407) is supposed to be 100w x 5 but is nowhere near that, the power output is much less than that. I replaced the front 3 speakers with some Axiom 3Tis which are far superior.. also the receiver makes some slight click sounds when changing between I think its -33 and -32 and it really starts distorting at about -14 (this is quite loud I should note) it is not very powerful at all. It also lacks DSP modes(I dont use them but some people might) and doesn't have a whole lot of bells and whistles. Also the remote is tiny and quite bad.

The good thing is that it decodes DTS and AC-3 (dolby digital) signals which is good as I watch a lot of DVDs. The original speakers do go pretty loud but the quality isnt the best. Also the subwoofer does its job well and can be tuned to individual taste and for when the cutoff kicks in. The surrounds are small but aren't quite as transparent as they should be. For an all in one package it was a good deal. I paid about $750 canadian at the Brick if I remember correctly. The price is good for an all in one solution, it would be difficult to get the same sound for the same price buying the components separately. I would recommend this for a starter home theater system or an apartment. It does sound decent for music but the home theater is its forte. Give it a listen before you buy.
