Very nice system for the bucks

Pros Great Price, Great sound. DTS
Cons Cheap wires (no biggie), can't use an equalizer.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I really like this system. It is more than adequate for the non audiofile who is on a budget. Don't use their cables!!!!
I am very pleased with my purchase of this Kenwood HTB (home theater in a box) system. I did my homework at all the consumer sites. I want to thank all the people who wrote reviews on this product all over the net, we do a great service letting people know what we think. It got great reviews by almost everyone,(can't please everyone). I like this system because you get superior sound for the money. I had already spent enough on the other components of my Home Theater (36" Sony Wega) and could not drop a lot of coin on this end. Now mind you I had a perfectly good system in place it was not however "surround sound".
So it went in to storage to make room for a system that allows me to hear sound behind me in movies; go figure.

Before I put the old system away though, I compared the old JBL speakers with the new Kenwoods by swapping them back and forth. I can honestly say that there was little or no discernable difference between the two, and that's a good thing. The JBLs are almost twice as big and were not cheap. I was concerned that my music cds would not sound as good on the Kenwood system as they did on the Carver system that I had. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it did sound as good. The subwoofer is extremely powerful, keep small children and people with heart problems away from this bad boy when watching any Arnold movie. KABOOOOOM. The DTS mode and the Dolby digital 5.1 are excellent. The other modes are also useful and make for a convincing surround sound experience i.e. prologic, etc. when viewing non digital media such as VCR tapes (yuck).

There are a few things that should be addressed though. The cables are really cheap, discard them immediately and replace them with good gauge radio shack jobs. There is no way that I can use my equalizer; the system is not set up to accept it. That's a real negative if you have one already and can't use it. An EQ really shapes the sound. The remote is well…..like most remotes pretty much way too big, way too complicated. One other thing I will replace eventually, the center speaker. A heck of alot dialogue comes from this all important speaker. It is, as are all the speakers made of paper. Paper is ok for the rest of the system but not good enough for this speaker. I will get a new one made of polywhateveritscalled, some day.

That's about it sports fans. To wrap up, I went from a very decent music only system to a very adequate home theater system for a relatively good price. I would definitely recommend this system to someone who wants a good bang (boom?) for their buck.
