The Bottom Line:
If you're on a budget, get it.
I purchased the Kenwood KDC119 High Power Car CD Player a few months ago from Crutchfied. At $130, the price was the selling point. Kenwood has been around for a while and I don't recall hearing anything bad about them, so I decided to check them out.
This CD player advertises 22 watts RMS/45 peak x4 (see my car speakers review for definitions). I would rate this this CD player as a budget CD player. It does not have all the bells and whistles, there are no flashing lights, and it does not have a detachable face. What it does have is everything you need if you just want to enjoy some simple music in your car, and you're tired of the scratchy tapes which are so out of date.
FEATURES
The most interesting feature of this player is the ability to lower the sound with the press of a button. I am not talking about lowering the volume by pressing the volume button. I'm talking about being able to cut the volume to a third of what it was and back again by pushing one button. This is extrememly useful when you are going through a drive thru or someone has to use their cell real quick. This feature lets you decrease the volume immediately and then increase it to its original level without having to press and hold the volume button.
There are 18 FM/6 AM station presets; nothing special there. To set the station you just scan in the station and hold the preset button for about 3 seconds. It's too easy. The other features also include seek tuning, system Q-Sound control, preamp outputs, CD frequency response 10-20,000 Hz, CD signal-to-noise ratio 96 dB, FM sensitivity 9.3 dBf, 1-year warranty, and Kenwood's CR-2 tuner for clear radio reception.
You can choose from 6 preset Q-Sound control settings, with names like Jazz, Pop, Rock...etc. You can also create your own using a digital readout. I personally create my own as I find the presets a little off. You can also adjust the balance and fade digitally. There are no knobs on this model.
Mobile Preset: The Mobile Preset function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Mobile Preset setting of "SP-F" (flat), "SP-O" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP-6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers) or "SP-5" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).
Another cool feature is that if you turn off the CD player while the music is playing, when you return to the music it will pick up right where it left off.
The main buttons light up green when the lights are on, which makes nighttime use easier; however, they are still pretty dim and you have to focus. The buttons are somewhat small, but they are laid out in a logical manner. You can switch between CD and Tuner with the push of the same button, so there aren't tons of buttons cluttering the face of the player.
If you are looking for a flashy CD player then this CD player is not for you. If you want a nice-looking player simply to move into the 21st century than you may want to take a look at this player.
On a side note, you can also purchase this from crutchfield with a 30 day no questions asked return policy.
