The Bottom Line:
Great unit, great price, excellent sound.
I purchased this unit for $297.00 about 4 months ago. It was a breeze installing due to upgrading from a previous Kenwood unit.
Sound quality:
This deck is by far the best sounding one I have ever owned. Its crisp, clear, accurate and virtually distortion free, even at high volumes. The frequency response is great and there are multiple ways to customize your sound via the built in crossovers and system equalizer.
Functionality:
It may take some time to learn all the fatures in this deck as learning your way around it can be slightly difficult due to its smallish multifunction buttons. With all the sound related features jammed into this unit, it can be difficult to dial in the right mix to get the sound your looking for, but when you finally do, its time well spent.
The dot-matrix display with its animated icons, spectrum analyzer and useless "screen savers" is attractive, bright and somewhat intertaining, but the resolution could stand to be a bit tighter. I do like the changing icons with each poke of the SOURCE button: radio, CD player, CD changer all have their respective animated displays. The display is customizable to show the analyzer, track times, CD text, icons, time, adjustable seprately, together, or a mix of the two.
Rotating D-mask; A great feature is the fully automated rotating/removable face. Once the key is in the ignition the face rotates to display its goods, extract the key and the face rotates 180 degrees to show is dull, featureless backside blending into the rest of the dashboard. You also have the ability to angle the face upward about 30 degrees. This is useful if the unit is installed in a vehicle where its difficult to see due to a low mounting position.
Appearance:
I really dont like the cheap looking chrome-colored plastic face of this unit. It looks as if its trying to jump out of the dashboard begging for you attention. As annoying as this may be, it subsides in time.
The dot-matrix display as noted above is attractive, bright and informative.
Overall:
This is a great unit with powerful clean sound crammed with features, bells, whistles, lights, buttons and gizmos.
-Get this deck if your looking for a significat upgrade, want to play MP3s like clean strong sound and want to have full control of your music.
-Avoid it if you dont like flashy look-at-me styling and dont have much time or desire to learn all included features.
