The Bottom Line:
The bottom line is...the X459 offers attractive features, good quality, and at a reasonable price.
The Kenwood KDC-X459 is the first "premium" head unit that I have owned, and it feels good to step up to a higher end cd player! To compare it with a cheap cd player or even worse, a factory head unit is impossible. This Excelon (Kenwood's name for their higher-end products) delivers on all the important things and even throws in quite a few extras.
The Raw Facts
This units boasts 50 watts by 4 channels and 22 watts RMS of power, 24 radio presets, a detachable fold down face, 3 preamp outputs, and a 2 year warranty.
First off, the unit does produce decent power, but like all cd player amps, its probably much less than the specs state. However, if you are planning on sticking with just a cd player and no amp, this unit would probably meet all of your needs power wise.
For all you AM/FM folks out there, the unit comes with 24 presets to store your favorite stations, and it offers very good FM reception. It picks up my favorite stations effortlessly and better than any of cd player I own, including the ones in my house. For some reason, the unit barely picks up AM stations, but I'm not even sure what stations there are to pick up around my area, because I don't listen to AM.
For security, the deck comes with the standard security feature, the detachable face. I like this feature fairly well, and it works better than some security features that other units offer like hidden faces.
If you plan on adding any amps to your system, the X459 is perfect for that. It gives you the flexibility of 3 preamp outputs to work with. Other add-ons you can get include CD-Changer, Sirius Satellite radio (which I will be getting soon, hopefully), and other gadgets.
Bells and Whistles
As far as extra stuff goes, the X459 offers plenty of things for you to play with and marvel at.
First off, the display of a cd player is one of the most important things a cd player can have, and many quality cd players really blow it here. Many manufactures seem to think if you throw every color imaginable on a cd player and make the colors jump all over the screen people won't notice the bad design or frustrating button placement. This deck offers a simple, yet attractive design that really comes to life when lit up at night. Buttons are well placed, and navigating through cd tracks or adjusting settings is easy.
The X459 also offers a neat feature in that you can remotely cut off your subwoofers by pressing and holding the AM button. This is a great feature for anyone that wants to cut off subs in certain situations.
In the menu system, you have access to all the standard options like bass, treble, fade, and balance. You also get options like Mid, Treble Frequency, and Bass Frequency. Although, I'll have to admit I'm not sure what all of it does.
