Kenwood is awesome!!
Pros
Works great with stock amps/speakers Full sound! Lots of bells and whistles Great customer service
Cons
After 3 years (and just a couple weeks after warranty) the unit stopped working.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I recommend this unit to anyone willing to read the manual and believes in great customer service.
I purchased my X859 late 2002 for $499 loved it right from the start. It is a little complicated to use, but as I am a lover of gadgets and an avid manual reader, I don't mind. It worked great and I loved the "oohs" and "ahhs" I get from my passengers when the face flips out and plays the light show on the display. If you are looking for subtle, this is not the unit for you!
The MP3 capability is great for road trips, no changing CDs every hour, you can put your whole collection on just a few CDs in MP3 format.
And now to the bad news...
In December of 2005, the unit just stopped working. I had purchased an extended 3 year warranty (third party) so I called the warranty company and they told me I was out of luck as my warrranty had run out ONE MONTH EARLIER! Not good.
I tried my luck and wrote an email to Kenwood customer support via their website pleading with them to at least evaluate the unit and find out what was wrong. To my suprise, they responded with a 90 day extended warranty covering parts and labor for any necessary repairs! I was impressed! This was in January 2006, so I had until March to send the unit in.
Unfortunately, personal life got busy and March came and went and I foolishly hadn't sent in the unit (duhh!). I wrote the same person from Kenwood who responded before, again begging for mercy, fulling expecting them to just ignore me. 2 days later, they sent me ANOTHER extension for 30 more days!! Unbelievable! Needless to say, the next day I had the unit in the mail to their facility in southern California. Now I'm just waiting for them to get back to me.
Update:
The unit came back in less than a week fully repaired and cleaned. Apparently the problem I had was common to the unit I purchased so they just replaced a defective part. I have been using it for a few months now and am very happy Kenwood treated me like someone they actually wanted to win over, and they succeeded!
