Great sound from a great looking tiny unit
Pros
HDCD decoding Class A AND AB amp Horizontal or vertical positioning GREAT sound
Cons
CD slot might have some problems...
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Great unit, perfect for a room or office. Has a sound quality infinitely better than all those other micro-systems, and less expensive and space-consuming than high-end systems.
Appearance
A beautiful piece of art... The CD receiver is a great semi-glossy metal and the speakers are great with the wood, with or without the grill protection. The LCD back-light is a nice color, not too aggressive or flashy at night. And finally an audio system that doesn't look like a casino machine or a disco light set.
Price
A bit steep. I paid about 600 US$ (including shipping, and duty tax) for this unit, which only comes with a CD. MD and cassette players are available, but count an extra 200-250 US$ each. But still a great value!
Sound quality
Since it comes with a class A and class AB amp, this unit sounds awesome at any level, from 1 to 70. At lower levels (from 0 to 50), the class A is used to deliver great sounding music. Since it is a micro-system, that's pretty much what it has to do, right? Great sound at low levels. Even at 10, this unit has balanced bass and highs, thanks to the Natural Bass EQ. Over 50, the Class AB amp kicks in delivering power at a slightly less quality level, but still way over the competition.
The 2-way 30 watt speakers sound like 3-ways, with very deep bass considering the size. These are pretty incredible, and they'll never distort as the amp only gives 20 watts, so don't be afraid to crank it up to 70.
The HDCD decoding is simply amazing. Listening to good-quality recordings that are HDCD just shows the possibilities of the VH-600. If it sounds bad, change the CD. End of story
Functionality
Almost everything (except setup, and the normal play, stop, input...) are only on the remote, so if you want to set up a random play, you'll have to keep it not far away. Other than that, the main functions are there : Sleep timer, On timer, Natural Bass EQ, oh and so much more... Just two words are needed : "Great functions". There.
You can place this unit vertically or horizontally to save space and the LCD display automatically rotates to the correct orientation! Great! And the slot CD permits easy CD insertion even when in vertical position.
Just one problem : the slot loading mechanism sometimes has problems ejecting the CD the first try if you don't press stop before. It'll eject fine though if you just tip it a bit over to help it. Minor problem.
Overall
If you are looking for a great unit that is perfect for a room or office and also that has a sound quality infinitely better than all those other Sony JVC micro-systems, and less expensive and space-consuming than high-end systems, buy a VH-600!

Update
I changed the desk on which the stereo was and the ejecting problem is solved... Probably the old one had a slight angle towards the rear... So finally, no problems for this unit (except on crooked desks of course...).
