The Bottom Line:
This Kidde Basic Smoke Alarm was easy to install. The tester works just fine and the unit is very loud.

We have a number of smoke alarms and Carbon Monoxide detectors in out home. A recent tragedy on Long Island lead us to evaluate our detectors. One, a direct wire smoke detector, which I plan to review soon, failed the basic alarm test.
Being we are going on a vacation and yet having other members of the household home we picked up a basic smoke alarm at the Home Depot. We chose the Kidde Basic Smoke alarm. This is a battery powered detector that includes the power source, a nine volt rectangular battery.
The Kidde Basic Smoke Alarm has the basic round shape, about five inch diameter in white. I followed all the basic directions of where to place the detector. This one is on a hall ceiling outside a bedroom.
The Kidde Basic Smoke Alarm notes that it has
A Test Button and LED...that lets you know it working.
A Warning "Chirp" ...that does its thing when the battery starts to weaken.
Utilizes a state-of-the-art ionization sensor...I suppose that's good.
Loud 85 decibel alarm...wow it is loud when I tested it.
Mounting Bracket...I really liked this. You can mount the bracket, a small light ring that the main detector later slides into, with ease. The Kidde Basic Smoke Detector comes with screws and a couple of plastic anchors for sheet rock and plaster walls.
Tamper Resistant Pin..You don't want a smoker doing something that will keep your smoke detector from working properly.
Ten Year Limited Warranty on Alarm...Sounds fair to me.
The directions give advice as to the best place to have alarms in single and two family homes.
I have had Kidde Brand detectors before and they seem dependable. The one that doesn't work any longer is a different brand.
Just a quick note. Though smoke detectors are law and work well, diligence is also important. Years back my daughter woke up, well before any of our alarms went off and smelled smoke. Sure enough we had an attic fire that burned down and into her room! n Thank God everyone got out of the house safe. I was at work very early that morning and received the call from my wife using our neighbors phone that they were standing outside watching the firemen hack a hole in our roof as the flames shot out. It's not a good feeling and a fire can happen to anyone.

I haven't gotten to that stage with this particular smoke alarm just yet but others we own, that are battery run, do give proper warning.
