The Bottom Line:
The Kidde Smoke Alarm with Hush Control 2 Pack have ionization sensing technology to give you better fire detection & protection. And, it's incredibly affordable!
Smoke alarms are one thing in my household that I religiously keep a check on and make sure they are working properly. Last year I decided to replace a few of them because I felt they were probably too old, and so I searched around for some that were reliable, but also within my budget. Reading reviews online, I noticed that the Kidde smoke alarms had a lot of positive feedback and worked consistently well for a number of years. I saw that Target sold the brand online, so on my next trip to the brick & mortar I decided I would buy a few of them if they were in stock. Shopping around, I came across this 2 pack for less than $20 and these are the ones I decided to buy.
The first thing you might notice with the Kidde Smoke Alarm 2 Packis that the smoke alarms are really small. Much smaller than a lot of models, these are only around 4 inches in diameter. Because of their size, they can be very discreet and don't stand out in a room. These smoke detectors require a 9 V battery each, but batteries are included with this pack so you are ready to go as soon as you bring it home. Also, in the pack you receive the mounting hardware which consists of the mounting brackets and 2 small screws (each). They are easy to hang, and really easy to place on their mounting brackets, but you should place it in what's to be it's permanent spot (or the spot your old one was) because of the tiny holes in the wall caused by the screws. (At least they're tiny!)
One other thing that is included with this pack is a set of directions. Directions are really not necessary because installation of this is really a no-brainer, but these directions give you pointers on where the best spot in your room would be to hang them. It tells you about how smoke rises and how it can be pulled by a door and just helps you make the best choice in location for the safety of you and your family. I thought this was a nice touch and should be standard with any smoke detectors.
These smoke alarms have ionization sensing technology, meaning they'll pick up smoke and carbon or invisible fire particles. These type of alarms are also supposed to detect these particles sooner than photoeletric alarms. But, I suppose a flaw is that they are also more susceptible to false alarms caused by dust and such. I haven't actually had this happen with mine in the 8 plus months I've had them, but it is a common occurrence with ionization detectors. Another great thing about these smoke alarms are that they have a Hush Button. If the alarm is going off, all you need to do is press this button and the screeching noise will turn right off.
This alarm will let you know when the batteries are low in them by emitting a small high decibel beep. It's not a continuous beep, but it won't go unnoticed. Also, in normal use, there is a bright red light that will flash. this is really just there to let you know it's working. And, of course, you get a test button as well.
The actual alarm noise is incredibly loud. They have 85 decibel alarms and they cause my dog to go absolutely crazy when they go off. I love them though because they're loud enough to hear from any room in my house, even if I'm clear across the house (my rooms are nearly soundproof, so this is quite a feat). I have one in a dining room which is connected to my kitchen and sometimes someone in there will burn something. It's not enough to actually have noticeable smoke, but my smoke alarm doesn't miss the chance to sing out real high and loud. It's almost too showy (wink). But truly, this is the most sensitive smoke alarm I've had yet. I've known a lot of people who lost everything to a fire, even loved ones...and so I am glad (as opposed to annoyed) that it is so sensitive. I'll take those wails every time!
For me, this has been a great buy, and I'm planning to replace the others in my home with these as well. To be so small, they are so powerful and I truly feel that I can sleep easy at night and feel safe. Smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years, and these are definitely worth consideration. I would recommend them to anyone.
