The Bottom Line:
Klipsch 5.1 systems are both renowned for great sound and notorious for high Amp failure rates. Here's how to get the Amp repaired properly.
I've had my Promedia 5.1 system for a bit over 2 yrs. And they put out superb, rich sound. When they work. My sound started cutting out off/on and it didn't take much research to discover (klipsch.com/forums) that they are notorious for frying Amps. Some customers are on their 3rd repair. But Klipsch just keeps sending out the same, flawed design over and over. And at $100 per repair, it just doesn't make any sense.
But I found a better solution. There is a guy (elliot-tronics.com or eliott4113@yahoo.com) that can repair your system for you. From the Sub enclosure, you remove 12 screws, disconnect a couple of wires, and remove the Amp. Then pack it up well and send it to Elliot. I sent mine in a couple weeks ago. It took about 2 weeks (far faster than the 4 - 6 weeks Klipsch takes) and $80 plus shipping both ways. Elliot replaces the components that fail with premium quality parts that should outlast the rest of the system. I got mine back yesterday and put the Amp back in the Sub enclosure. It works and sounds great! The same rich base and crystal highs.
Assuming the repair holds, I've got the best of both worlds: great sound and a reliable system. I'll keep you posted if the repair doesn't last...
