Cons
Fuzzy review mode, bad macro, cheap lens
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I would recommend this to anyone for normal use because it's simple to use but would recommend something better for professionals or those aspiring to be professionals.
I received this camera as a birthday present, upgrading from a 4.0 megapixel Kodak, and have owned it for about 4 months. For the most part I have been very pleased. It does take beautiful pictures, small enough to carry even when doing mild hiking, and seems to be durable(not cheap plastic). It has many different settings which make it easy to use for a variety of purposes. It is definitely better when using a tripod, but of course, what camera isn't?
Bad Points:
*When viewing the pictures in the review mode, pictures will often have a lot of noise which decreases when you zoom in but when you zoom in all the way, things look blurred...not crisp. On the other hand, some pictures look great in review mode but are blurry when you zoom in on them. Difficult to get a happy medium.
*It seems you have to be two feet away to take a good close up picture of say a flower even on their "close up" setting for objects within 28 inches. This makes taking shots like this very difficult for someone who is wanting to expand their talents and work on being more professional. Not good for macro photography!!!
*When the camera is zoomed in all the way, the lens is very cheap and feels flimsy. If touched you can feel the plastic move...not good.
*Pictures don't always come out how you expect. Pictures don't turn out very well in poor or unnatural lighting.
*Can be difficult to put in certain memory cards. My younger brother has a camera exactly like mine but when he puts in his memory card the locking mechanism on the card gets pushed down and the camera won't read it. Not sure if this is a fault with the memory card(made also by Kodak) or with the camera.
*In some cases zoom looks like it will turn out a great picture but when the button is pressed to take the camera the picture turns out blurry.
Good:
*Have had no problem with it eating batteries. I use Engergizer lithium batteries and have had to change the batteries maybe once or twice within the last four months.
*Small and convenient to carry on hikes.
*Relatively light to carry.
*Pictures turn out relatively well in natural light.
*Easy to learn.
*Multiple settings for different situations(i.e. snow, beach, sunset).
*Good for normal camera use (i.e. taking pictures of kids, pets, events).
*Has different picture effects (i.e. black and white, sepia, high color).
*If caught immediately, you can retrieve a picture that was deleted.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this camera to a friend if they are looking for a good camera for every day use as I have taken some beautiful pictures with it. However, for someone aspiring for more in a camera or to expand their skills into being a more professioanl photographer, I would keep looking.
