Good alternative to the Flip

Pros Removable Flash media and standard batteries makes it convenient when you're on the GO
Cons Weak zoom. Wide body makes it harder to hold still.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This handy and small camcorder is a great alternative to the Flip and offers convenience with the use of AA batteries and SD cards for memory.
Wanted to get a simple, easy to use camcorder without having to pay $400+. My friend had the Flip and I was sold. But didn't want the same old same old that everyone has. So I looked into the Sony and the Kodak but ultimately decided on the Kodak.

I like the Kodak - main reason is the use of regular AA batteries and SD cards. With SD cards being relatively cheap, I treat it like I would videotapes. I pop a 4GB card in to record. Pop it out when it's full and I have something "hard" that I can view or lend to someone else. The Flip doesn't have removable media so you have to connect and download/remove videos when it gets full. It's also convenient using regular AA batteries so I can always have fresh spares around when I need it instead of having to wait to recharge the battery.

What about how the recorder works? It's as easy as the flip. Click the record button and you're recording. To view, click another button. The quality is very good outdoors. When I hiked -- the skies came out bright blue and it was able to adjust to difficult light conditions. It doesn't quite work as well indoors -- there's the yellow tinge that's common. Ironically -- because the zoom is non-existant (it has an optical zoom which essentially lowers quality of the video), the colors and image looks great outdoors but you can't zoom in on anything well.

The quality is as a whole is good -- 720 so not true 1080 HD quality...but good enough.

Because of the shape, it's hard to hold it still like you do with a regular camcorder. But it is compatible with a tripod so I use a portable REI tripod to stablize the camera.

All in all -- this is a great alternative to the Flip.
