Good for the price

Pros Great price for decent to good quality, tough.
Cons Can slide out of focus with slight pressure on the eyepieces.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Rated it above average because for a 20X80MM binoc, it is excellent for the price. If priced more competitively, say in the $200 range, I would rate it average.
I bought this binocular from Surplusshed.com for $89. They check each pair for quality, collimation, damage, etc. and are very customer oriented. 20 years ago, I would have laughed at anyone paying less than $500 for an 80MM binocular but the prices have dropped dramatically in the last 5 years.

These are 20 X 80s, made, as I understand, by an Italian company from Russian optics. Konus has surplused many after failing to penetrate the U.S. market.

I figured for $89 bucks, if they are only mediocre, I could probably sell them easily to a hunter or fisherman. I was suprised to find they are quite good, especially for the price. NOt great, but very good for the price.

Multicoated, but not all surfaces, gives good sharp bright images. Good light transmission, low reflection. I could see some yellow and green colors in Comet 17P Holmes in October 2007. In early November as it expanded, it seemed to glow brightly. Very good wide field deep sky binocs. I could see the Trapezium in M42 but couldn't separate them, of course. I could see the shape of Saturn's rings, but could not quite separate them from the planet. Some cloud bands are visible on Jupiter and the Galilean moons are bright.

I mount them on a parallelogram mount. (You will need a mount.) The center bar adds rigidity to the binocs. The mounting post slides on the bar and can be locked in position. That makes balacing on a mount very easy. 1/4X20 female threads for mounting.

Flat for about 85% of the + 4 degree field. Bak4 prisms would be better, but the bak7s installed are good quality and with adjustment screws. Clean inside & out. Sturdy build w/rubber coated exterior. I would prefer 15 X 80, because the exit pupil is so small at 20X that it takes a bit of effort to find the sweet spot but GREAT EYE RELIEF! Very good for people wearing glasses.

Mine came in a bubble wrap bag inside a decent carrying case. Lens covers are included.
