LG 1010 - The ticking time bomb
Pros
Small, inexpensive for its features.
Cons
Product reliability!! Manufacturing defect!! No analog roam.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
It would be a good phone for the price.....IF you don't want analog roaming capability AND you don't mind that it will completely stop working in a month or 2.
This is my first review for Epinion, so bear with me.
First, some background....
I've never much been a fan of the mobile phone, though I must admit I am a tech freak in every sense of the word. I just didn't like the idea of always being "within reach." Well, I recently began traveling extensively for work. I also recently got married. After some household debate, I decided that I would get a cell-phone for any emergency that might arise while on the road. (And also so that I could call my wife from the store and ask the inevitable question "What was it you wanted me to pick up?")
The Good:
Since my wife already had a phone on the Sprint PCS network, we decided it was best (and cheapest) just to add another phone to her plan. So we went to the local Best Buy store. After mulling over the phones for 30 minutes, I decided on the LG 1010. It was one of the cheapest models @ $99, yet was one of the smallest and most attractive, and it came with a $50 mail in rebate and $50 Best Buy gift card. How could I go wrong? So I happily took the phone home, activated it, and began making calls that same night. The phone gave pretty decent reception, even in remote areas. Occasionally I would be out of reach of the PCS network, and in those occasions this phone was no better than a paper weight since it is single band and incapable of analog roam. Nevertheless, I was completely happy until 2 days ago.
The Bad:
2 days ago, I'm having a conversation on my still new phone when suddenly it drops the call. No problem I think. I'll just wait until I get back into an area where the network signal is stronger. Needless to say, the phone never picked up the network again. It's in perpetual "Searching for signal" mode. I've since come to realize (after reading many on-line reviews describing this same exact problem) that this is a constant problem with these phones. Goldstar even issued a recall. Right now, I'm quite furious that Best Buy would still be selling these phones after the product has been recalled! So now I've got to trek back to the store and beg for some store credit or a refund.
Conclusion:
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PHONE. There is a known manufacturing defect! If you see it in a store, notify them that it has been recalled. As for me, I'll be picking up the Sanyo 4900 as soon as I get my money back.
